OT Funeral readings

  1. Barbers Adagio for Strings as sung by the Dublin University choir (ie
they replace all the strings with voices).

Very very nice bit of music that makes the hairs on the back of your
head stand up (unless you are dead though - in which case you just lie
    there with a silly grin[1]).

    Phil.

[1] Which may or may not be the same behaviour you had when alive.

The overwhelming impression is that he's inordinately pleased with himself,
and with his mastery of the jargon. And anyone who chooses to refer to
'shrooms, hash, peyote etc as "visionary plants" is palpably a knob.

The stains on your lab coat are the marks of your seniority (see also,

It's new and as yet unstained ... that's why I'm eating chocolate. I'm
very, very confused and have a thesis committee looming.

I could go for a MWHID, but that would be a cheap shot. Note that the
piece makes no reference to God. Even the 'spirit' bit can be
interpreted as merely the animal consciousness you referred to. The only
mystical bit is the "timeless" stuff. It could be interpreted by Phil as
meaning that the "I" we talked about a while ago is "timeless".

To me Gibran is expressing concepts of a universe that has always been
and will always be, that are quite fashionable and even 'scientific'
currently. He might have been banging on about 'souls' when he wrote it,
but a reader of the Tao Te Ching will see it as "the continual return of
the myriad creatures to the cosmic principle from which they arose."

That Cosmic principle does not mean a deity. Now if you are in a
position to say that you *know* what that cosmic principle is, I am
    prepared to be enlightened.

The last bit is hinting at the importance of the Here and Now. Even the
past and future can only be experienced there IYSWIM.

    Wouldn't dream of it.
For you it has to be from Jonathan Livinston Seagull:

I think you need to re-read what I wrote - the word fully is important.

There are parts of science we fully understand, can measure, and in
those areas I agree with you - but there are also the parts that we
don't fully understand, where only theories exist. Those parts aren't
really all that dissimilar to religion.

It's a load of old phlogiston really.
