OT Funeral readings

  1. Indeed. The main reason I disagreed with it was that it assumes that no
religion has a true basis and that they can all be expressed in mythic
    archtypes.

Which Ace would doubtless agree with. Just in different words..

it's like attila the hun, or winnie the pooh. it implies that time is
    measureless[1] and immeasurable[2].

[1] false, because we have several measures for it, the si one is called
    a second.
[2] false, because we measure it all the time using devices called clocks
    amongst others.

  4. Looked at any quantum mechanics lately? Some of it looks pretty
    spiritual..

    Try it with a comma:

"You would measure time, the measureless and the immeasurable"

The last five words are describing qualities of (or acscribing qualities to)
    time.

That's one small answer, yes. There's technique, cultural context,
aesthetics, comparison to other forms, realising that Picasso[1] was
    *really* derivative...

I could go on but I'd break the Internet.

    [1] He's the greatest IMO.

  9. By using my brain and thinking about what the author is trying to say.
Buzzwords are buzzwords whichever the speciality - all you need to do
is to work out a) what the buzzword is short for and b) how that maps
onto concepts that you already know (or can learn).
"Don't read the words as written - look for what the author means to
    say"

Everything maps back to core themes. They may be expressed differently
(cf Horus/Baldur) but they all relate to common concepts.
It's really quite easy. I'm surprised that an intelligent chap like you
    is having a problem..[1]

Sorry, wrong use of the word 'if', replace with 'when'.
But my point essentially remains the same.

[1] As in "we think it's there, we just don't know what it is or how to
get to it. And in the meantime we'll all argue furiously about it".
    Sounds like religion to me!

See! See! dog gets it. Ot rather he gets that there may or may not be
anything to get and even if we did get it, it would all change again
    anyway.

Playing the grammar and syntax card never works with me, seeing as I
frequently get it wrong myself. Perhaps it just needs a comma? It
doesn't help that this version is missing the first bit. The usual
"Prophet" question and answer set up. The sentence is answering a
question from an astronomer. My reading, and I stress that this is my
reading, is that the mystic is seeking to challenge the (presumed)
scientist's view of time as finite.

Translation - time, like the "life" of the universe is infinite. No
beginning, no end. Have you listened to that "In Our Time" podcast from
    last week yet?
Only teasing. I am aware you realise there is more to life than bread
and circuses. The emotions in themselves have no meaning, but they may
prompt some introspection (as Lady Nina was alluding to). Attending a
funeral (as a guest) seems like a good opportunity for a bit of
introspection to me, but it's better if it fairly swiftly moves in to
"eat, drink and be merry mode."

  18. Having read the thread (but not the links) I would be inclined to go
back to your tutor and tell her that it is all a load of old bollox and
if she really has an interest open mindedness she will find there is
more truth on the back of a packet of cornflakes than in the collected
wisdom of these so called sages and she should look to the real world
for a clue and not wankers with little or no agenda other than to make a
reputation and a bob or three from the royalties but who gives a toss
    what I think.

  19. No - that's "the scientific method". Science is both a process (the
Scientific method) and an information-store. So if you are not using
the former (ie - how many people repeat Bohrs experiments?) then you
are using the latter. And you need to understand what you gain from the
information-store in order to add to it.
    Does that include human minds?

Wilson may have. [1] I didn't. However science does not happen without
    scientists and the above applies.
