Probably breaking much netquette but here goes.

I have copied below a question that I posted to alt.music.big-band, but
unfortunately haven't had any replies. I'm hoping someone here might
have some (helpful) ideas, can't work fleabay and as they are not mine
to sell I oughtn't put them there. So here goes:-

I'm a newbie to this group and I'm looking for some ideas of the worth
of a collection of Glenn Miller 45rpm EPs. My Father brought them back
from the USA in the early 60's, a set of 15 EPs in a presentation set
    with some narrative
about Glenn Miller and the Army Air Force Band. It was made by RCA
Victor, no. 45EP EPOT-6702, carries a copyright date of 1955. The
middle insert of the EPs is missing, that's the bit that fits on the
spindle, they look like the records that used to be played on a
jukebox. As far as I am aware they are in excellent condition, don't
    remember
    him playing them that much.

Any ideas of value would be gratefully received.

    TIA

By the way didn't Miller ride an Indian, attempts to put on topic, even
    just a little bit.

The missing centres might explain why he didn't play them much.

If you post again you need to snip your sig.

  3. I can't help with the value directly.

On a recent edition of the Antiques Roadshow a document signed by Glenn
Miller (and his band) just prior to his death popped up. It was worth a
decent sum of money but was clearly very rare. The person providing the
valuation was Paul Atterbury - a roadshow regular. I've googled and
can't see an obvious website through which you could contact him.
However there are references to organisations he works with / for who
might be able to help or at least point you to an appropriate auction
    house.

The other AR person who deals with records / music is Hilary Kay but she
tends to deal more with the rock and roll era and later.

You could try E mailing the Antiques Roadshow or else enquire with
someone like Sothebys as a starter.

  4. I've dealt with Christies a great deal, and they are very helpful. My
contact was on film/TV memorabilia, so not the right one - I sold the
bottom half of C3P0! But I'd call them, they are a good bunch. Oh, and if
you are in London, I'd also recommend Chiswick Auctions.

Missing centres aren't a problem: my brother used to buy lots of ex-jukebox
singles in the 60s. These had the centres removed to fit the larger jukebox
tapered spindle. They used to come with a click-in adapter to convert them
back to play on a domestic turntable

  6. I *think* some new singles came that way as well. I've still got a couple of
    those adaptors somewhere.

Thanks Pete, the records on the link above are the same ones as my
Father's. Shame they didn't get any bids even when starting as low as
$19.99. Guess I'll try Paul's and Alison's suggestions. Or just buy the
centres and a record player and give Dad the enjoyment of hearing them
    again.

There's a fair few people selling record decks you can use to copy to CD.
    Good luck with it.

Well I knew you could get them back in the days when 45s were the
standard format (although my first experience of singles was at 78 rpm).
Orange triangular adapter IIRc. Suppose collector record shops must
    still supply them.

A USB turntable might be easiest, but I have had good results picking up
the output from a standard turntable via a phono to line adapter and in
to my PC line input. Plenty of free sound recorder packages available.

I use a not too expensive package called Magix Audio Cleaner which also
    enables hiss and click removal.

I've got a centre here that I can post to you if want one.
Just send me you postal addy & it'll wing it's way.

I still have a few thousand singles, and other vinyl records in the loft
from when I had my mobile disco!
Used a few on New Years Party night, went down a bomb in the Village Hall!

The last turntable I had included a pop-up thingy to increase the
diameter of the spindle. Modern technology, eh?
