For what it's worth I eschewed my usual online sources, got off my arse and
checked the OED and its 3rd definition was exactly that and the example
given is "a race of authors". So yes, the WI could be described as a race of
tea cosy likers and jam afficianados. I can imagine why a lot of you don't
like the idea considering you've been banging that drum so long now but I
can only offer these words of consolation: I was right again.
