Oh, OK. That's a relief, in a way. Not pleasant for the individual,
    however.

Not really, 'cos I think they'd be beyond simple to chuck away your
experience and obvious affection for the job ... but sense has been
chucked out with the baby, it seems, in these dark days.

That kind of thing is very common with Google groups these days. They know
it's broken but they just don't seem to care.

I'm amazed that someone else hasn't come up with something better. I mean
we're talking of a searchable database of usenet postings. Can't be
difficult - can it? It could be made to pay with advertising.

I imagine the trouble would be getting access to all of the historical data
that Google acquired when it bought Deja News.

Do you happen to have one?
Ahh, the cry of the 'next big thing' of the internet, since time immemorial.

Well, yes. But I'm talking about starting from scratch. If someone had
started it last week, Champ would be able to find his post that's gone
    missing.

And couldn't someone just suck the old deja archives out of google's server?
I mean, what's left of them. Rumour has it they lost a large part of the
    data.

I was also wondering if these days, with disk space being virtually free, do
usenet servers still have a concept of retention? Or do they now just keep
everything? I would imagine that one could probably go back quite a while
with the cooperation of a few of the major players.

All the above is me thinking aloud, so feel free to thrash me with a freshly
scrubbed lettuce leaf if it's nonsense.

As I said in the other reply, I doubt there's as much in the old deja
archives as people may think there is. Google searches rarely come up with
the goods for me these days.

This is sort of interesting, from 2009:
    http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/10/usenet/

I reckon that although Google has lots of money, they have a finite number
of engineers and probably none of them are interested in sorting it out.
It depends on whether it's a full feed with all the binary groups. I
imagine you could store uk.* fairly easily, as you say.

I think Google are pretty laid back about a lot of their 'systems'.
Google Maps occasionally goes tits up in unpredictable ways,
particularly the KML upload parser. They aren't exactly riding along on
the crest of their 'Wave' either are they?

I've certainly had clauses in an employment contract that said I will
do nothing to bring the name of the company into disrepute. That
covers a multitude of sins and is open to whichever interpretation the
    reader puts on it.

    What's this "company time" thing?

Many people nowadays work flexible hours, not clocking in or out,
    especially of working from home.
