    What's your budget?

At a guess I'd say that your best bet for guaranteed sun, not too far
to fly and good for 'single women' (1) would be Mombassa.

    (1) Are you looking for a casual **** or a houseboy to bring home with
    you?

I'd be looking at somewhere in the Indian Ocean at that price.
Short flight, xmas and only away for a week?
    Take him with you.

Having had a mix of weather at xas in Portugal, various Canary
islands, Tunisia and Egypt over the last 7 years, I want to go
somewhere with proper hot sun that's not a ridiculous flight time
away. I only really want to be away for a week so a long flight just
    cuts into the away time.

Preferably somewhere by the sea so I can continue the swimming on xmas
day thing. I'm going on my own so somewhere that's good for single
    women travellers. Ideas?

We're off to Bermuda for the New Year break and though I wouldn't call
it hot the average temperature is about 70f and that's good enough to
    sit out drinking beer.

The flight times aren't too bad, they speak English, you can hire
motorbikes and it looks as if there'll be plenty of other things to do
on top of drinking and loafing in the sun.

Within your parameters it's a push. Cyprus might be as good a bet as
    any.

Further South into eeefrica and you run into too many
bl^H^H^H^H^undesirables who might want to kidnap you and turn you into a
    sex slave.

    Up to 2k.

How long does it take to get to Cambodia? I think I've found something
but it is for two weeks and not leaving until the 28th. However it
would mean I could cross Angkor Wat from the list of things to do
    before I die.
Nah, I love the one I've got, my only entertainment will be a pile of
    books.

I've done Cyprus in October and it wasn't warm then.

I know, the only one I've found so far is The Gambia.

I've found this which again doesn't fit any of my criteria but looks
    good.

He's going home, I want sun. Dublin isn't really known for sun and I'm
not going in the Irish sea at xmas. Plan is to join him for new year,
    hence a week away.

  15. I once spent xmas week in Dublin. The sun shone the whole week.

Know what you mean about the irish sea though.

Keep in mind that flying around Chrimbo isn't going to be quick to
*anywhere* thanks to everybody else having had the same idea.

Flew out to see Ann on Christmas Day last year thinking that it'd nice
and quite - the flight turned out to be standing room only. Well,
almost. I don't think I've seen a plane that packed in a long time.

I've done the 500 quid last minute stuff, I want something decent
somewhere warm. Life is risk, do the stuff you can do now.
I'm a poorly paid academic who made sure she saved when she was doing
highly paid consultancy and still does the odd bit now and then. It's
one of the perks of getting old.

Plus I'm not much of a one for consumerism, I don't have to have the
latest gadgets, I rarely buy clothes, my mortgage is small, I've no
debts to service so I have a significant amount of disposable income
each month. Which is going to increase by nearly £150 a month from
    stopping smoking.

I went to Florida in the week before Xmas. The weather was lovely and I
    even got sunburnt.

Somewhere on the western coast, like Naples, would insulate you from the
    worst of the Disneyfication.

Hmmm, a possibility I hadn't thought of thanks. I'm now wondering
about starting the holiday on 14th Dec when I'm due to fly back from
Boston and spending two weeks hopping around the US, catching up with
friends in Chicago, Austin and Chapel Hill. It means not a lot of sun
    though.

BGN how late can I leave booking for xmas?
