OT Help - I can't kill me mouse - or keyboard.

  1. Wotcha.

Knowing how 'you lot' seem to have answers for most problems, how's this one
    for size ?
I've just re-installed Windows ME on this here machine - easy enough, even
for myself seeing as it has a recovery disc.
Now the fun starts. When I hit >> start >> shut down, the computer does
indeed shut down, same as it's always done, but it doesn't fully shut down.
The 'num lock' LED on the keyboard is still illuminated, and the LED in the
    mouse is still active.
I've done the usual 'read the help' files bit, and even had a nose around
on a few websites but to no avail. Anyone got any suggestions ( other than
    the bloody obvious ).

I built a new pc for myself using an abit motherboard. numlock and mouse
stay on too. Its a quirk I believe. I have installed 98se / me / xp and it
    makes no difference.

I think I've found the problem.
IIRC there was a patch for this sort of behaviour.
    Windowsupdate.com is your friend.

With the abit motherboards, this is a feature in the bios which allows you
to power up the pc by just using any key on the keyboard or by moving the
    mouse.

Even when I disabled it in the bios the numlock light went out but the light
on the optical mouse stayed on.

Just ended up living with it. Using a USB mouse and keyboard would get rid
of the problem (of the lights).

  8. I had an incomplete shutdown problem on my previous system from time to
time. Farting around in the BIOS mostly cured it; try seeing what power
saving settings you have. Basically I turned everything to 'off', ie
none, and 'instant power off'. It would still do it occasionally,
    though.

Ugdating the BIOS cured that problem and introduced another - had to
manually set the processor speed on every bootup for the faster chip.
Fortunately that machine was never switched off.

I had similar with my old machine. I found that kicking the side of the
box or whacking it hard when it played up was best. It never cured the
problem but I felt better about it.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Lozzo
Mate of mine used to tell the following (almost certainly apocryphal)
    story...

Seems he was working in a ground-to-air missile radar system that would
occasionally lock up due to a sticking relay. A sharp clout on the
appropriate spot on the case would solve the problem. They changed the
relay to no avail, they messed about with everything they could think of
with no improvement. Eventually they just decided that the "clout the
box" solution worked fine and would become SOP.

Then a new officer shows up and decides that clouting Her Majesty's
radar is Not Good Enough, Something Must Be Done.

My mate installed a large red "RESET" button that, when pressed, would
solve the problem. Officer happy, peace restored.

The button? It was connected to a large solenoid that, when energised,
would clout the box in just the right place...

Strange thing is - it used to power down fully, but now doesn't.

That's the bit that's puzzling me - mine always used to shut down fully -
I'm just curious as to what's changed and causing it to play "silly
    buggers".

Had a nose in the BIOS - tried setting things that seemed related to "off".
Hmm - if it wasn't for the noise of the fan, I would probably leave this
    thing on all the time.

  15. My father-in-law tells a similar story from when he was on Thor in
Lincolnshire in the late 50s. The INS on the missile has a couple of scopes
for getting fixes prior to launch: one that looked at a distant mark
somewhere on the edge of the airfield, and one that picked up a datum off
the gantry itself. Both had little doors to cover them in flight, but the
gantry scope's door didn't have an automatic closer. So it was my FiL's
job, as a tech sgt, to nip out with a broom handle, as the countdown was
getting into the vinegar strokes, and knock it shut. And this is completely
    non-apocryphal.
