My old lappy is distinctly past it now, everything takes ages and Win7
only half runs on it, so i decided to get a new one.

HP Envy 15 Core i7 720 (in the clearance bit of PC World, it was a lot
    cheaper than the Dell equivalent)

The laptop is great, small, light, fucking fast. Worked even better when
PC World gave me the right battery for it.

It has an external DVD-RAM drive though which for some reason is going
    a s s l o w a s a s l o w t h i n g.

DVD read speed, 2.4x max. CD read speed, 10x max.

Took it back, got a replacement, same speeds.

It is reporting itself as an HP DVDRAM GS20L, firmware DS05.

Any of our resident PC bods got any clues?

I've searched high and low and can't find any firmware for it.

I do have another external DVD-RAM drive that works fine so not too
bothered by this, but it'd be nice to get it working properly.

Oh, plugging it into another PC (Win XP) it works with one CD or DVD and
then (in Device Manager) jumps from drives into USB Controllers saying
it cannot start as the drivers are already loaded into memory when you
    put another disc in.

Or c) individual.net holds onto posts the same as cheesy, so anyone who
reposts without waiting a few days should be shot?

I've not seen that problem on individual.net, usually it's the
    newsreader playing up.

What are the exact PNP device ids ? It's probably a generic Lite-On or
TSST drive flashed with HP specific firmware.

Will be something like - CDROMPIONEER_BD-
    ROM__BDC-202_________________1.01____

What does that mean? That they don't propogate posts in the normal caring
sharing way that they're supposed to?

Yes, but only when they're having 'issues'.
