for house + contents : any suggestions?

My renewal from Direct Line was stupidly expensive (and nearly twice
as much as last year). I've used moneysupermarket.co.uk etc. but most
of the cheaper ones, I've never heard of the companies.

Ring them back and tell them they are taking the piss - they'll put you
through to the business retention department where you give them a
figure you want to pay and you'll probably meet somewhere quite close -
I saved £380 on a similar policy I had with DL on one call.

I called them. They didn't seem interested in retaining my business,
so I told 'em to shove it.

Give Hiscox a go. I used to get a discount from them but they were
    pretty competitive.

The only one I've had to make a claim with[1] was Norwich Union and
that was a fairly simple process.

[1] A car drove into the living room wall and drove off. Despite
witnesses getting the number, I never did find out the
who/what/why/wherefore. I guess it was stolen as it was registered to
someone half a mile up the road.

    M&S?

Maybe not be the absolute cheapest, but the coverage is excellent.
For once, I have nothing to add as named items on the policy.

Tried the AA? They've done us fine for contents and the claim after my
garage was raided went smooth as silk.

Still known as Royal & Sun Alliance. I used them for a quote when I
was working on the project, and since then they've always been
    competitive for me.

They're competitive because they're an utter shambles. I will never,
    ever, use them again.

Irrelevant now, but you can check it online - http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/

(Or you could look at the little sticker that somebody peeled off the
certificate and stuck on the windscreen...?)

It's probably still on the old certificate, wherever it is... So now'd be
a good time to peel it off the new 'un, no?

(The bit that says "Peel here")

    quidco.com gives some useful rebates
    http://www.quidco.com/finance/general-insurance/

    I had £80 from Churchill last year & £18 from Bradford & Bingley[1] this
year, with a premium of £116.45 for contents & buildings :)
Current rebates from More Than & Lloyds TSB are £75, NUDirect £80

[1] it's actually a policy from BISL who trade as Budget Insurance[2] and
    others
[2] their standalone quote was pretty good too

Nor me. The 'tart' was issued with one this morning. I was expecting an
advisory for the rear tyre, but the one for too tight handlebar to tank
clearance surprised me a bit. TBF I did lay it very gently to ground at
0 mph in a car park on that side on one occasion (I blame a bad back and
someone else's inconsiderate parking) so perhaps the 'clip-on' has moved
    a gnat's cock.

Nowhere really to stick the sticker on the Voxan though.
