  1. I'm not there yet either. Mind you I still find the techie bits
interesting. The boring bits is actually having to talk to customers. I
only do that when the problem is sufficiently bizarre that the normal
    guys can't cope.

    And bizarre *is* my metier[1]..

  2. Well yes. Although if you do it well enough you can delegate most of it
    to other people.

    Quite. It's a bit of a calling.

Retraining doesn't guarantee replacement income in another field anyway.
Rising through management makes you more vulnerable to downsizing and
    reorganisation.

Ace banged the rocks together and they said :
Thats like saying the Land Rover Defender is the de-facto standard for
    roads.

It doesn't matter how shit the roads are, it'll drive along them.

Which, whilst true, is a load of cobblers from the "standards" POV.

A few years ago the BBC seemed full of that kind of thing. Lower down
the pay scale, I know of people who've been contracting round different
bits of the bbc for a decade or so - even the ones who left seemed to
end up back there one or two contracts later for another stint.

Err, no it isn't. 1. 99+%% of road users don't drive them. 2. If they
did, it would be a standard for vehicles, not roads.

I'm trying to apply your thinking to the Brunel Bus Station, and it
    ain't working.

Ace banged the rocks together and they said :
So IE is a standard for web *browsers*, not the web (i.e. the standard
    for HTML, etc)

So? I was quite clear that I was talking about a 'standard' web
browser not supporting a so-called standard web feature. If you
couldn't understand that, and I'm sure you could, then that's your
    problem, not mine.

Said "so-called standard web feature" being defined by the body that
defined (most of) the rest of the web, so your "standard" web browser
    is missing a bit.

    Sub-standard, really.

IE is terrible/great at guessing missing bits and fixing errors on the
fly, which is great if it guesses it right, bad if not.
