    What, 40 ?
But even the krauts aren't consistent

hochdeutsch - viertel vier = quarter to four

    in franconian = three fifteen

Old Norse. Influence from the Viking era predating the Normans.

They still count this way in large parts of Norway.

Good point, but it *looks* similar!
French counting is bizarre, base 60 or some such.

  8. There you go making the mistake again. The assumption is, because we
always do it this way, that the bit of English we are talking about is
yet another example of the adoption of a foreign aspect of some sort.
Of course it never fucking occurs to you fools that this adoption thing
is a two way process and English gives out as well as takes in. In this
    case it is giving out.

Sucking his keyboard for inspiration, Tosspot typed:
Nah, base 20. It's a Celtic thing - Welsh is similar. The French have
partly rationalised it to base 10 (trente, quarante etc), but still keep 70
    = sixty-ten, 80 = four-twenties and 90 four-twenties-and-ten. Blame the
    Gauls.

people are a lot lazier now. think of the "hot new offer from dfs, only
three nine nine." can't be bothered to say "three hundred and ninety-nine"
(or "three hundred nine and ninety")

    - look, that was 4 whole syllables we didn't have to articulate!
    - well *done*.

That one bugs me all the time - especially when done by some chav who
can't even pronouce it properly, so it comes out as "free nine nine".

  16. My mum does too. It's a Celtic fringe thing (her Dad was Welsh and he
did it - she was brought up partly in Wales and partly in Dorset).

  17. Given that my mother does it and the first time she went to the
sourth-east was when they moved to Kent 5 years ago I doubt it..

I think it's probably just a 'rural English' thing.

More than just a Celtic fringe thing, unless you class Kent and Sussex
    as Celtic fringe.
