A month ago I left my work laptop's power adaptor on a train (it was
under a newspaper and as I had the plug bit thought I had the whole
    thing).

I have now finally got hold of a replacement (they sent the wrong one
initialy) and have plugged into the very dead laptop and it remains dead
(it's a Toshiba Satellite Pro). Is this normal, do I have to wait x
    hours before it'll fire up?

In other news I now have the Guzzi back - it hasn't mysteriously fixed
itself and still won't fire. Not sure if this is good or bad.

Obvious question- do the LEDs on the front of the laptop light up
when you plug in the PSU? Did you plug the previous (wrong) PSU
into the laptop? Wrong polarity or voltage could have fried the
    lappy.

The power lead I have is somebody else's 'spare' one and has successfully
operated my machine in the past - he has the same laptop. We share
office space and it saves us both lugging leads about so I can't see it
    being a power lead problem.

Backups aren't a problem either as I'm pretty good on that and have the
data I need. It's just my spare laptop has a knackered screen and is a
    pain to use.

Yes, I have a battery charge light on. No, I didn't plug wrong lead in
as it had a much smaller connector and wouldn't even fit.

Remove the battery from the laptop and see if it will boot with just the PSU
    connected.
I've seen a faulty battery that prevented it powering up before.

    FIXED IT!

I'd taken the battery out to see if it was the same as my spare laptops
when it died (it wasn't) and I hadn't put one of the catches back in the
    locked position.

another dumb question - have you tried holding down the power button
for a reasonably long time, say 10-15 seconds?

I have a spare PSU one for a satellite pro A60 - Liteon model
PA-1900-05, came with laptop. If it transpires your one is borked let
me know. Email me (email in headers is valid) if interested. Would
sell you the old satellite pro but it is fairly well fucked now (USB
does not work, does not install a new OS (not even ubuntu) although
hard drive that was in it was OK. screen hinges borked. PSU connector
on back wobbly. Battery gives approx 1 min life, if you are lucky) -
do not even want to put it on ebay. Still looks fairly mint though!
I think my laptop did the playing dead thing and it eventually
    started.

  16. Do you mean the battery is dead and won't charge up or the laptop is
    dead too?
If it's only the battery, then it's probably fucked, I'm afraid. A lot
of laptop batteries just die if they're left lying too long or left on
    constant charge.
As for the laptop itself, it certainly should work off the mains
adapter, but are you sure it's not a duff connector at the back of the
    laptop?
