OT late night lifts - sensible or not?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Work in progress, Nov 8, 2006.

  1. For various reasons I'm pissed off and being weak willed I've just
nipped out to the petrol station for some cigarettes.

While I was waiting, I must have looked dejected or sighed and the
bloke behind me said 'Bad day?'

'Bad week and it's only Tuesday'.

'You can have mine, I've run out of petrol about a mile back'
(Raynesway for those who know Derby)

'Did you get a lift in?'

    'No, walked it'

'Shame I'm not going that way, I'd have given you a lift back'.

Now, that wasn't bullshit, I would have given him a lift, but as I got
into the car it struck me that that could have been potentially a very
    stupid thing to do.

I didn't get any sense of danger from him, but I wasn't exactly paying
    attention.

So, was I sensible, would I have acted differently if I was a bloke
and would the women here have given him a lift if they'd been going
    that way?

If you're a bloke then offering a lift wouldn't be out of the question, but
if you're a lass and out at night on your own, then offering lifts isn't
    something I'd recommend.

    Beav says...
Sensible reply, I wouldn't want any bloke to be *that* traumatised by
    the experience.

  4. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Work in progress belched forth and ejected the
    following:
Nothing wrong with a bit of danger, biker boy.

In retrospect do you feel you did the right thing? If so, fine. If
not, next time give him a lift.

You're comparing a very small risk of major damage to yourself against
a high risk of sore feet for someone else. That's an equation with no
    objective solution.

He's only walking a mile, and it'll teach him not to run out of petrol
    in the future.

  8. Yes, I think. Feel a bit bad about leaving him walk. I did suggest he
asked the other bloke in the queue if he was going that way.
If he'd been a biker I'd have given him a lift, which is ridiculous,
as given the evidence here there's far more likelihood of him being a
    dodgy pervert.
    Like so many others.
