    Anyone got one of these?

I had to buy one recently (only thing in the shop after my Netgear blew
up and I had to get connected that day) and well, it SEEMS utterly
    shite on the wireless front.

I can't get any wireless devices to connect - they used to, a bit. Now
    nothing works.

Laptop connects to router - but the router DHCP won't give it an IP.

Has anyone else got this model of router and have it working on the
    wireless okay?

I'm about >< this close to throwing it in the bin and buying the
netgear I should have got in the first place.

dwb () gurgled happily, sounding much like they
    were saying :
I've just reconfigured my NetGear router - older model, wgr614 - after a
    firmware upgrade.

Complete pain in the arse. UNTIL I stopped trying to be clever and set it
up manually, and just bloody went through the wizards completely.

Exactly the same story as it sounds like you've got - worked at first, but
as soon as you started changing wireless parameters, it either wouldn't
connect or got very tight-fisted with DHCP.

Best thing for it. It's slow as **** when you /do/ get it working.

Good advice. I have one of these and it works fine after a bit of setup.
The existing client kit had always been OK with old router but I had to
upgrade drivers for the Linksys PCMCIA card in my laptop before it would
connect at G (rather than B) speeds. Asus and Linksys PCI hardware in
other machines was fine, picked up the connection and just worked.

TBH I don't recall if I upgraded the WAG54GS firmware, but, if there is
an available update from Linksys, do it. Wifi had fairly bad coverage
until I plugged a supplementary aerial into the socket on top - you
might be able to rip one off of your old router as I did (possibly
illegal in "some" countries). As with any overclocking type activity,
don't go near open upgradez, unless you really know what you are doing
or are happy to risk frying your output transistors.

Hmm, I am having similar problems here, albeit with an SMC router and my
laptop with a US Robotics card.

Fucking thing will not work, although it used to.

The other 2 laptops with built in wireless seem fine.

    Fucking thing.

Nah, Ive had as many bad experiences lately with Netgear stuff as I have had
with 3com and Linksys stuff.. My vendor of choice these days on the home
front anyway, is Belkin. Never had a problem. Though their tech support is
crap. Free, but crap. I had some bloke in Delhi trying to tell me to put
all the devices in my home network in the DMZ zone in order to get a
wireless adapter for the 360 working. Twat.

Anyhow, buy Belking is my recomendation, FWIW.

    Yep

Mine works fine, running two laptops, a PC next door and a PDA from it

Gives DHCP out fine, download loads of stuff most days. The thing just
worked from plugging it in with sod all config.

Spend the (arm and leg) extra and buy Draytek seems to be the only way to
    get reliability.

I've got the WAG54G, the blue/black one which may be different?
Works fine on the wireless without any problems!
Ha ha! I threw away the netgear as it was utterly shite!

What model, if its a few years old it may just need a new capacitor on
teh PSU input. Its a known problem

Yes. Got one for evaluating and testing at work.

Be warned, dont think it comes with Aerial.
    It needs one.

Mine was too until my line got upgraded, then it just started to
drop connections constantly, reset itself at random and play
silly buggers with DHCP. This obviously caused me much
confusion as it was the last thing I looked at, but once it got
swapped out for a Linksys everything was back to normal.
