If I want to organise a live group discussion what's the best way of
    doing it? IRC-esque.

I thought MSN as it is simple enough, doesn't require 'special' software
    - comes with Windows (if they're freakish enough to use Linux then
they're freakish enough to work out an MSN equivalent) and will do the
    job.

However, how does it work? Can it be easily joined? Can I put out an
email saying inviting people to join a discussion, say, on Saturday at
18.50 [1] and all they would have to do is enter an email address into
    MSN and internetmagic takes over.

I'm hoping there'll be less eye rolling here than when I asked my
    daughter.

I can see bringing some structure to the MSN discussion could be
    problematic. Any ideas?

Skype may be more universal but AIUI MSN is fine.
