I want to make an audio CD from my MP3 files. Essentially I want to
copy snippets of the introduction to various song/tunes and with space
in between put them onto a CD. I have iTunes and windows media player
    at my disposal.

    So:
1 - can it be done

    and if so

    2 - how?

I can turn pooters on and off but am no good at techie stuff. Any
advice, constructive that is, gratefully accepted.

    TIA

Are the mp3 files already in snippet form?

If so, just ask media player to make a CD for you.

    If not use this http://www.pistonsoft.com/mp3-splitter.html

iTunes, create a playlist of all the songs, set the track spacing in
the preferences, click the "burn" button when viewing the playlist.
    Insert CD. Wait.

Or something along those lines, I haven't opened iTunes, but it was
like that last time I did it.

iTunes also allows you to select clips.
right clip on song > get info > options > (halfway down)"Start time",
    "Stop time"
