The only thing we couldn't get in France was fresh milk.
All we could get was UHT. Where do I get it or what do I look/ ask for?

We were staying near a milk farm but I didn't have the vocab to ask for it.

    TIA

I was fine with it, but my mother in law didn't stop moaning about it.

Simply 'lait frais'. If they don't geddit, try 'lait pasteurisé',
although that might cause some confusion as some of the better fresh
milk is actually not pasteurised, but 'micro-filtered'.

But pasteurised should be available in small quantities in most
supermarkets, usually miles from the other, disgusting UHT, milk.

I guess it can vary from area to area, mind - ski resorts are usually
OK 'cos they're full of foreigners and bits like here in Alsace are OK
    because they're, well, full of foreigners, I guess :-}

Gord knows why the French put up with the UHT stuff.

    dixit linger:
you can get it in supermarkets, it's just not as common. afaicr it's not
called anything special. it comes in glass bottles or carafes instead of
tetra-paks, and it's much more expensive than uht.

a conclusion i came to several years ago is that the brits and the frogs are
diametrically opposed with respect to their tolerance of fresh bread and
milk. brits are happy to eat long-life bread but hate uht milk, and the
frogs don't see the problem with uht milk but draw the line at long-life
    bread.

Often also found in plastic bottles and tetra-packs, IME.
Somebody said this just the other day - was it you or have you been
    frogging?

  7. Agreed - truly vile, especially with tea, or on cereal.

Any supermarket. Look for the bottles in the Dairy section. I buy it
once in a while, because as the milman says in 'Speed 3' of 'Father
Ted', no one likes that shite (of UHT).

what about cheese? Isn't *French* cheese good in baguettes too?

Your hubbie needs a new injection of Frenchness. All this bacon and
    brown sauce nonsense.

Fucking right I can. Gets served with cereal occasionally when skiing.
It sometimes smells OK enough to fool me, but chilled or not, I can
    taste it instantly.
    Thank **** for that :)

    This was my biggest question.
Everything else tases so good so why does the milk taste so shit?
    And why don't they revolt?

I love getting the bread in the morning with butter and strawberry jam.
I fiound it started to go soft by the early evening so we used to get it
fresh from the supermarket who did an afternoon batch for evening.

Nope, it wasn't really soft just not as melt in your mouth crunchy as the
    morning.
All the bakers nearby were shut by 12!

Ah right. Leave it another couple of hours and it'll be crunchy as you
    like...
On a Saturday, was it? Anyhoo, I was referring to the supermarkets,
    not bakeries in general.

I suspect that there are three main reasons.

Firstly, the French know three-fifths of **** all about making a cup of tea.

And tea made with UHT milk tastes like Satan's smelt.

Secondly, there are still HUGE areas of rural France where a refrigerator is
unknown. A UHT milk doesn't need to be kept cold, it has a distinct
advantage. Add to that, thirdly, the fact that pasturised milk is less
common in France, and you have two types of milk readily available - UHT
(similar to sterilised in the UK) and fresh untreated milk..

That being said, I have a house in the rural Southwest of France, and I have
NO trouble in getting fresh untreated milk (the same as the old green-top
    bottles in the UK)
