Dunno, hence my initial response. If I wanted to live in the house for
    20 years, I'd buy it.

What about renting the place out for 20 years, subsidising the
mortgage with the mast income? Should be onto a winner!

When I was working at BAe Dunsfold with the Blue Fox radar, fitted to the
Sea Harrier, we could kill a rabbit at 400 yards just with the RF power.

Next time you're watching Top Gear (or one of their spin-off programs)
filmed at Dunsfold, look out for a strange "bay window" on one of the
portakabins, overlooking the airfield; this is where we had the Blue Fox
    mounted :).

Blimey, that's really going. I was told that the airfield radar there
was deliberately run at a lower than possible power but that wasn't to
protect rabbits but so as to not annoy the french too much.

"Oh christ, not rabbit hotpot again".

I've heard similar about the Foxbat radar; supposedly they weren't
allowed to turn it on until airborne. In that case it was supposedly
made that powerful so that it could shout over any jamming. Was the
Blue Fox that powerful for the same reason?

  8. In a heartbeat if it's cheaper because of the mast. The field strength
from a mast 50m away is bugger all and likely on a par with standing
    next to a toaster.

Amen. I have the same. I hate holding the damn thing against my head
for any length of time, but when you're line management in 24X7 IT
Operations, it's a bit of an occupational hazard :/

Just take the number and call people back from a landline, that's what
    I do.

Well, i've got handsfree a bluetooth headset and an earpiece, but
skype and a (wired) headset & mic is usually the best compromise.

Not really an option for me at least, no landlines removed to save
costs a few years back. VOIP but that's often a PITA, certainly less
    reliable than a mobile.

Doesn't matter anyway. In a few years we'll all have WiFi phones and
GSM/GPRS/et al will disappear into nothingness. I'll be surprised if
the mast will even last that long.

The only reason that it hasn't happened yet, is because the operators
are trying to recup some serious money on bad technology investments
    (e.g. UMTS)
