Long shot - I don't suppose anyone's got one kicking around? Vertical
    crankshaft?

I managed to destroy one over the weekend (lunched its internals[1] in
    quit spectacular style)

    TIA

[1] nothing to do with the fact that I had just rebuilt it. At least not
AKAIK. I did speak to someone who works with these engines a lot, he
said he a rebuilt a couple of the same engine and they also let go in a
    similar fashion.

They are all very similar - main differences appear to be the length of
the crankshaft - which is apparently very easy to cut down if too long
using a hacksaw (with the engine running, says my local expert).

There's a ton of info on the B&S site - just put in the type and model
number of your engine vs. one you may be looking at and you should be
able to work out if they are similar enough.

They are quite bombproof, those. I have one on my mower.

Did you check the oil in it ?

Yes I thought their engines were pretty much indestructible too.
However, this one has caused a few problems. Admittedly I've had it
    working hard (long grass).

I suspected it of running low on oil when it got -really- hot. But I
checked, put some more in and then ended up overfilling it and so got a
lot of smoke. It was also making a god-awful noise. By this time I had
convinced myself that it must have seized and so stripped it down.
Couldn't find anything wrong with it apart from absolutely *loads* of
carbon in the head. I think this is what caused the overheating from
pre-ignition. Honed the bore, put new rings in it, put back on mower.
Started fine, ran ok (except I think I overfilled it a tad again, arse,
cos it still smoked a bit.)

Then it started to vibrate like hell. I assumed this was fairly normal
from a largish single, and that I hadn't noticed it before.

Then a large bang and lots of rattling. The counter balance stuff inside
has all disintegrated and taken out it's bearings (plain) effectively
    ruining the crankcase/block.

When I talked to my local lawnmower guy this morning he said he had
rebuilt two of those engines and had exactly the same problem - he
thinks that particular model is not quite right somehow.

So, I could get the crankcase welded up, new bearing bored out, new
balance shaft etc., but I'm not convinced it won't do it again. It could
also do with more power. Hence I'm looking to replace the entire engine.

No, but if you get desperate, a Tecumseh *might* fit and they're not
expensive, but definitely built down to a price. I don't know how much
    a B&S costs in comparison.

  6. There are two distinct ranges of B&S engines - the cheap shit ones with
splash lube and fitted to cheapy shite lawnmowers and the better ones
with proper oil pumps, decent bearings etc.
Even the good ones will die eventually, but they do last quite well.

Given the choice, I'd rather have a small Honda lump - a proper Onda,
    not a Chinky copy.
