Not much. I mean, frames are reusable after you've extracted the honey. You need to feed them in winter - a few quids' worth of sugar a month. As colonies expand and you split them into two, you need to buy more hives. And keep adding 'supers': the compartments that contain the honey bearing frames. They stack on top of each other which is why you sometimes see these rather tall hives. And you can flog the honey....
Think I can handle that. How often does that happen? Hmmmm. Very interesting. I'm guessing this is something for next spring? -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 145 2.0 Cloverleaf 156 V6 2.5 S2 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
The Older Gentleman to: <snip some excellent advice> Bookmarked for reading later this afternoon, cheers
Depends if you have a healthy colony and they don't swarm... but certainly you can double your colonies every year, if you want.

various people were chatting about bees etc when ... Had a look at the suggested website, full of very very useful info that. Typical though that theres no associations in Beds :-/ From reading around it would seem that Ive picked the wrong time of year to be interested in this as all the courses etc seem not to be until spring :-(
IIRC it's time to feed them for winter pretty soon anyway, isn't it. So it's not like you're going to get anything out of a hive at this time of year.
Timo Geusch said: True, though by the time it comes round to actually doing something ill have forgotton probably :-/ Anyway, im sure theres something to do with the hive even in winter, if nothing else the kids would love to get involved in something like this.
Wicked Uncle Nigel replied to Donnie LOL. re the association, nothing listed on the website suggested by TOG, though on further googling found a Beds one, im assuming its affiliated anyway, not that im bothered as such as long as I could learn something before committing. ****, spot the numpty that couldnt even enter the beginners course yet!
