Where can I get a small sheet of engine turned aluminium or stainless?
    Google is failing me.....

It had crossed my mind - scotchbrite on a slow speed drill?

Pretty smart, except: why did he cut the shape out first? I'd have
marked it roughly, burnished it first, then marked it accurately and
    cut it out.

I have no clue, the interesting part (FSVO...) was the burnishing tool.

If I knew what engine turned was I might be able to help.

Maybe I've failed as an engineer?

I knew. Comes from watching the Antiques Roadshow as it was a way that
    Industrial Revolution silversmiths showed off.

I only discovered that phrase about seven years ago.

    I think its very stupid.

I thought it was going to get interesting when he said "First I marked the
    front bottom".

    Sadly.....

A piece of softwood dowel with a cross cut in the end and fine grade valve
grinding paste as the abrasive works quite well too.
