OT : Paging the iPhoneisti.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Brownz \(Mobile\), Jun 5, 2009.

  1. Noted a couple being wielded on the French Run.

Just got a free iPhone 3G 16GB on upgrade via 02.

    Couple of quick questions.

    1. How do I make wireless stay "On" ? With my N78 it automagically detected
if I was at home or in the office and used the appropriate access point.
With this thing when I get home I have to turn "Wireless" back on every
    time.

    2. Is there an app that can send photos via Bluetooth ?

    3. How do I recieve MMS messages ?

    4. How do I set a certain song on the I
    IPOD asa ringtone ?

It should auto detect. Turn on ask to join networks.
It can't yet V3 will have the ability.
You can't. You can convert songs to ringtones in garage band.

Should have waited. new iphone will be released next month, it's
    being announced next week
The WiFi on the iPhone is always on. It's only off if you turn it off
(or put the iphone in Flight Mode (although you can put it in Flight
Mode and turn WiFi on if your aircraft has on-board WiFi - also useful
if you still want your emails checked but no phone calls/text messages
    to interrupt you at night).

Go to settings and the second option down is WiFi, select it and you
go to the Wi-Fi Networks screen. Here you can turn WiFi off or on
(defalts to on) you can then scan for nearby networks and connect to
them as required. All networks which you join will be remembered and
when you're in range the iPhone will 'roam' on to them for data when
required. I believe "Ask to Join Networks" defaults to on, but I turn
it off. Walking down a street and checking your email gets annoying
after a while as it starts to pop up all wifi networks in range.

I did notice a bug in previous software for when flight mode was
turned off the iPhone would sometimes connect to the mobile network,
but leave WiFi as off. No idea what that was all about. I trust
    you're on the latest firmware?
No. The Bluetooth on the iPhone is for hands-free kits only. The
general idea is you go to photo in the Photo app, select the required
picture, then hit the arrow at the bottom left then Email Photo or
Send to MobileMe (if you're MobileMe/.Mac user)
There is a free app called "MMS" in the AppStore. OR: Wait until
iPhone OS 3.0 comes out in July. Your iPhone will get the update via
iTunes and this includes a proper MMS feature.
GarageBand on your Mac will let you do this easily. The only other
way (apart from buying a Ringtone in iTunes) is to open the track you
want in your fave sound editor, trim it to the required start point
and length, save it. Throw your sound snippit at iTunes, right click
it and select 'convert to AAC' or whatever it's called. Navigate to
the file in Finder (Mac) or Explorer (Windows) and rename it from
whatever.m4a to whatever.m4r and then throw that back at iTunes. Not
ideal. I did a couple then decided the normal ringtones on the iPhone
    just sound better.

  11. I know - I highly doubt it would be free though.

    Software 2.2.1 Build 5H11 apparently.
Ahhh.... "ask to join networks" was set to "on", set it to "off" now - and
    all is fine.

Double pants - didn't Apple realise that people sent MMS messages ?

Triple pants. I assume Apple don't have a product marketing dept that goes
out and asks what end users actually do with their phones ?

Or just a mouse with more than one button. My Microsoft Laser Mouse
5000 works perfectly well on my MacBook Pro.

Or I can just use the multi-touch trackpad and use two fingers as a
    right click instead of one.

I know it's set to 'on' out of the box, but it's not something I like
being prompted for. I know the WiFi networks I use and know where
they are. If I'm in a new place (Like McDonalds) just join their
network (Unlimited WiFi at Cloud hotspots, etc.) on O2 in the UK and
it remembers your iPhone's Mac address so you never need to log in
again. My iPhone just joins the networks I've told it to join from
    before when they're available.
I think Sir should have done a bit of reading up on the iPhone and the
specs before taking the plunge. There are a number of apps from the
AppStore to turn your phone into a WiFi file server via
Bonjour/HTTP/FTP. AirSharing is free (or was, probably still is) if
you want it from the AppStore. Bluetooth is purely for hands free on
the iPhone at the moment, but keep an eye out on the Apple WWDC next
week when the iPhone 3.0 OS is out. Your existing iPhone will get
this (free) update from iTunes as a normal software update, same as
the original iPhone 1.0 users got 2.0 for free. Should be out in a
month and might have some surprises.
In the last 8 years I have sent one MMS and received two. Therefore
the 'feature' is not really required on my iPhone, but it's nice to
have an app (which is free from the AppStore) in case the
    once-in-a-blue-moon feature is actually required.

But iPhone 3.0 OS will have MMS capability so you only need to wait
for a month, it's not a feature that I've ever missed though.
It's not complicated. You're going to need to trim your music file
down anyway (and put the volume on maximum) to make it a (useful) ring
tone anyway, all you do is get iTunes to convert your sample to an AAC
and then rename one letter of the extension.

Jailbreak the thing and then use <something other than iTunes> to make
ringtones / SMS alerts and copy them to the phone.

    Simples.
