  1. Boot Camp.

I've set the MacBook Air up with an XP installation via Boot Camp.

Is there any way to get the Boot Camp boot loader menu to appear on power up
automagically without hitting the Option Key ?

Don't think you can do that.

After using Bootcamp for a bit I now run XP in a virtual machine in
VMWare Fusion. I actually can't tell the difference in performance
now the VM has 2Gb ram assigned and is using both cores.

  3. Heh,

Its mildly ironic that I can open

    https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?eval=fusion

on my xp desktop PC with IE, but it won't open with Safari on the MacBook.

    why?

Haven't you just ended up with a vastly overpriced, under featured
    machine?

I mean, you had this anyway with the MacAir out of the box, but you've
just added the price of an XP licence to the plot.

sure, sure - I know this is a work toy for you, I'm just wondering why
anyone would buy a Mac and stick Windows on it i.e why does Bootcamp
    even exist.

Sounds odd, worked fine in Safari for me. Although on that front I'm
now using Camino because I didn't like not being able to configure
    Safari's popup blocker.

Find me a Windows laptop that has as good industrial design as a
MacBook Pro/Air, with a similar spec for similar money.

    I tried and failed.

    define "good industrial design"
The MacBook Air is very under specced - it's just thin.

having bought the thing, why do you want to run Windows on it? Don't
get me wrong, I far prefer Windows to any MacOS, but I wouldn't buy
overpriced Apple hardware to run it on.

  10. Weird.... could be one for the conspiricy theorists.... I have no problems
    downloading Parallels .dmg via safari.

    Thinkpad T61, for starters.

Actually I'd suggest it's a more reliable "industrial design", as there
aren't websites dedicated to lumps of plastic falling off it, like there
are with a lot of apple products.

    Plus, it's black.

    that's what I have. Lovely.
very black. And it has all the connectivity that's missing from a
MacBook Air. Oh, and a DVD-R drive.

Ok, so it's twice as thick as a MacBook Air, but I'm not a fucking
    girl.

**** no. I've got one sat in front of me all day, I don't want one at
    home.
    My Macbook is aluminium...
I don't find that a plus in laptops.

Ahh, it's the smaller ones I was thinking of, apparently lots of them
    crack around the case corners.

The T series all use internal titanium., which is quite funky. certainly
has allowed my T42 to survive several knocks.
I find other colours just tend to draw my focus from the screen. I'm
also becoming less of a fan of those reflective TFT screens, as despite
the richer colours they're a sod to read in a backlit environment.

SSD storage only until april, and more costly than an air.. but a lot
    more machine too.

    I'd quite like one.

I must admit, I did notice my T61 was noticeably lighter than my of
    R52.
I should point out my comments do refer to the Macbook Pro, not the
Air. I've got a matt screen in my Pro because I also don't like the
    glossy reflective screens.

The Air, I think, is a good starting point. In a year or so when SSDs
are up to acceptable sizes I think I'd get one. Not having the DVD is
no great hassle. I don't use one that much apart from machine
installation and then I could just plug in a separate drive.

Vaio's are up there with MacBooks as an indication of both more-money-
    than-sense and fashion-victim.

I have one and nobody could reasonably call me a fashion victim. Nothing
else was a light with an internal DVD R/W at the time.
