We had several laptops in our team use before I retired. The oldest was
a Vaio. It was also the best specified in terms of out of the box
capability for audio and video capture at the time. It got carted round
unceremoniously in an old briefcase so as 'camouflage' it, and subjected
to much ineptitude. Still in use today and going strong after nearly
seven years. Just one re-install of Win98 required.

You said *both* old bean. Anyway who would buy their own lappy.

Not only was it the lightest but at the time Bluetooth was a rarity.

  9. For me it was more of a case of 'spare XP licence, meet MacBook Pro'.
I can run my bootcamp setup in both native mode (ie booting into XP) or
    as a vm under Parallels.

And I can't remember the last time I did the former.. but I use the
latter to run stuff (some utils I use) that don't have a Mac
    equivalent.

Me. Twice - (old Dull laptop that Cheryl now uses) and now my MacBook
    Pro.

Why? Because I can do stuff to it (join it onto my home AD domain et.
al) that I wouldn't want to do to a work laptop (I also have one of
those - but it stays at work unless I'm away for a good length of time.

Me. But it's only a basic cheap HP one used mostly for dumping photos
from the digital camera and a bit of web access when I'm away from
    home.

Also sort of a safety net for if I ever bail out and go contracting
too, as I'll have something ready to use.

    How so?

I didn't even make a spreadsheet comparing laptop specs before I bought
    it.

Me. Because I like to maintain a separation of personal life and
work. That applies to my computers as well. There's no chance of me
keeping personal information on a machine that my company could take
    off me at any time.

My personal stuff mostly lives on a big **** off desktop pc.

And as of this afternoon I've a USB based personal
mail/browser/newsgroup solution, using a combination of Portableapps &
    Agent 2.0, on a 1GB key...

I'm also just playing with WakeOnLan on the afformentioned home PC, so I
can leave it in Hibernation whenever I'm out, but wake it remotely if I
    need to access something.

    Hmm quite.
I was referring to your occasional comment about leaving IBM of course.
We all know you'll die working there.
