Have a fairly nice G5 at work to play with. I'm currently trying to rig up a
really simple web-page on my domain to dump pictures form my travels and
some info to stay in touch with friends at home (.uk and .de). Any
recommendations for a free [1] html editor with a interface for dummys?
Furthermore I've been looking around the web for some ideas for a personal
webpage or similar I could use as a template [2], any pointers there? In
that regard is there a useful online howto for structuring a webpage?

[1] I know, you get what you pay for it, but it really isn't that important
if I have the latest .jenetmlt extension available as I wouldn't know what
    to do with it anyway.

[2] wasn't planning to rip it off entirely, more like a starting block to
    work around.

There's a free composer module from Mozilla called 'Nvu'. That does a
decent job of making a basic web page.

If you want to do some simple photo galleries then I can heartily
recommend a combination of iPhoto and 'Galerie'.

I actually still use Claris HomePage in Classic mode myself, it's great
for templates and using 'wizard' type creations. If you want a copy,
    Email me.

If you want to set up a simple domain, I've just started using my G5 as
a web server. It's already built in to Mac OS X (they bundled the Apache
web server software with it). All you need to do is bung everything into
your web server folder, click a button in the sharing prefs, and away
    you go [1].
Go to www.dnudyn.com and set up a domain name, you can get the non-fancy
    one's for free.

    I got this on there

    <http://andyhewitt.boldlygoingnowhere.org/>

(You can see some examples of pages created with 'Galerie' there.)

Which does IP forwarding to my own web server here.
Why not, download some web sites you like, and have a look at the source
code. Most of the Internet is blagged from somewhere else anyway.

[1] depending on how you're connected to the Internet depends on what
you need to do here. If you have a router/modem with a LAN, you'll need
to set up port forwarding from the external IP to your internal one for
    port 80.

I'll have a browse what it does and will let you know. Ta.

I already got my own domain and it came with 100mb of webspace, which is
prolly enough anyway, so no current need to host it on this machine.

I suppose, I'll have a further poke around.

Well, I guess it would be impossible to do it from the work machine for many
reasons. But I'll soonish have a home one too I guess, from there it may
    make more sense.

It's going to be more the story with picture in. So I guess I'll unpack my
macrame set. But will have a look at this Jalbum, as it may be useful for
    other parts. Ta.

    Righto.

I have it stored on my web server here, but it's username/password
    protected.

I just like the idea of having some control over who sees what on my web
site. It's also a breeze to update any pages.

Yes, I only use a Mac at home. It took a while before it dawned on me
that I could do this. I sleep my Mac while I'm not here, so my web site
is essentially an 'off-peak' affair only. I just put a basic site onto
    my hosted server at Eclipse.

I tried that, but found Galerie much better - YMMV applies of course :)
