  1. London (any) to San Jose.

Simplest route seems about 16hrs = LHR - IAH - SJC.

So far cheapest seems AA (with a promocode), but have the choice of AA,
Continental or United - any of these three better than the other ?

I went to San Jose once and flew direct to San Francisco and then got
    the train.
Dunno. I've used AA a few times & Continental once - they're airlines
and all much-of-a-muchness IME, although I know several of the regular
first/business class travellers hereabouts disagree with that viewpoint.

I'd go to SFO (approx 10hrs? don't remember exactly) then 1 hr more or
    less on http://www.caltrain.com/.

United because direct flight and radio channel 9 listening to pilot-
    control tower talks.

I would have thought it would be LHR - SFO then internal?
LHR to SFO is 11 hours.

I always fly LHR - SFO with Virgin through work, but then
we fly Upper and I don't pay. Would I pay? Flying there
maybe not as it's a day flight so you don't need the flat
bed, but the extra space, decent food, free drinks and
even the limo pickup just makes it effortless. Flying back
is overnight and the bed is a godsend so you don't lose
the next couple of days to jet lag.

Ai FFS, take the friggin' plane from LHR to SFO, get in a cage and drive
down to San Jose. Everything else is too painful to contemplate. SFO to
San Jose is about an hour to 1 1/2 hours driving depending on traffic -
I can make the B&B I use in Santa Clara in about an hour from the Hertz
    rental desk at SFO.

United and Virgin/Continental have direct flights from LHR - accept no
    substitute.

Ten minutes? Sure we're talking about the same San Jose? I think
    muddycat may disagree...

You need to add another 40 minutes to that travel time. That's at 4 am
too, 4pm it'll be closer to two hours.

That's going to be *very* tight atm for a decent flight, at least
judging by the prices that I've seen recently. That said, I would pretty
much refuse to fly multi-stop to the West Coast. The flight is long
enough for you not to be subjected to the fun that is an internal US
flight. Not to mention the fact that you get to queue for your luggage
    twice and all that.

You're kidding me? 1500 quid to the west coast? I found this
statement so unbelievable I checked on Expedia - first hit is BA,
    direct, for under 900.

About 1hr 20 if you get an express train, otherwise it'll be 1 hr 40 or
Speaking of which: I'll spend 5 weeks from the 19th of July in
Mountain View, is there any chance to rent a bike nearby? Suggested
    trips?
    Thanks

Muddycat will know for sure if there is any other place, but AFAIK any
Hardley dealer will normally rent out bikes. Plus, there's Eaglerider
(but IME H-D is a tad cheaper).

    Suggested trips?

Down Hwy 1, for starters (if they've opened it again down at Big Sur as
it was closed due to a wildfire).

If you've got the time, go up to Yosemite, or take Hwy 1 north of SF all
the way up to Eureka, then come back down 101.

  20. "It was a figure of speech". I'm also about to go out and have a beer. In
    reality I'll probably have 2 or 3.
