OT : Process Mapping Software

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Brownz \(Mobile\), Oct 2, 2007.

  1. Anyone know of anything half decent and free ?

  2. A white board or wallpaper and some markers are the best things for
    mapping processes.

If you really must make a nice neat soft copy version, then Visio does
quite well, but is not free. Word is somewhere between useless and okay,
    depending on what you need.

Big sheet of brown paper on the wall (non glossy), post it notes on the
    paper. Job done.

Well, it is when you ask someone else to capture it at the end of the
    day.

Now that every tuppenny mobile phone's got a camera in all the designers at
my place have started taking photos of every whiteboard session that we do.

  6. Been down the Post It Note / White Board route, nice, but not great for
    distribution etc

    Whilst googling I came across
    http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Which looks as if it will do most of what we need to do, and should cut down
on our Post It Note budget for FY08.

    Ta !

Quite common. Cameras are supposedly banned from all our US sites too.
The fact that the standard work issue phone has one built in seems to
    have been overlooked...

I should think not. You might drop it in the deep fat frier or get
distracted texting your m8z and forget to cook my McNuggets all the way
    through.

Of course as I don't have to ask if people would like fries with that I can,
thanks to the wonders of modern technology, now reveal what I do for a
    living ...

It took an hour long meeting to go through that ... and I've been explaining
it to all of the people in the meeting since last December.

    Visio rocks.

I keep telling the developers at work that as soon as Microsoft add a
"Generate Java code" button to Visio they're all out on their ears.

I'll second Freemind, I find it quite useful for that kind of stuff.

I tend to export to PDF or as XHTML (clickable map version) which is a
nice way of hyperlinking out of the map to other documents.

I think someones nearly there with a UML product.
    http://www.visual-paradigm.com/product/vpuml/communityedition.jsp

Although you probably have to pay for the java stuff.
    http://www.visual-paradigm.com/product/vpuml/demos/roundtrip/

Maybe they could use it to improve productivity and prevent their job
    heading east.

I was given Visio here last year for doing a lot of process
flowcharts. It's fucking wonderful [1]. Sign me up.

[1] Wasted more time playing with the software than doing the work,
but since it made the work so easy, it would have been rude not to.

We rolled out a load of Nokia 2610s last year, and they're still a current
model. Also, the Nokia E60 is promoted as a non-camera business phone.

I've been using Visio for flow-mapping for nearly 10 years, and while I've
got good results eventually, it's always been a faff, especially to maintain
and update stuff. I suppose I ought to look at later versions.
