Couple of weeks ago I used the BIN to "secure" a Tomtom Rider V2 Europe
system for £220. Unfortunately, the guy contacted me and explained he'd
actually sold it to someone outside ebay that afternoon for £200 and
immediately gave me a refund - so no pain, just a little disappointment.

There are so many variations of Tomtom Rider (UK & europe, uk & ROI,
Urban) so it's a little puzzling exactly what all the differences are.

Anyway the key to this is I wanted to narrow down my ebay search and
    entered:

(tomtom, tom tom) (rider, rider2, rider v2) (europe, european) -urban

To my surprise this also lists "TomTom Urban Rider" - shouldn't the use
of the -urban prevent this from appearing?

This doesn't answer your question at all, sorry, and i have v little
experience of sat navs, but i've been researching recently and found
this, the Garmin 60csx, for usd 200 on amazon US.

    (hope link works)

A friend is bringing it over in a couple of days as they won't deliver
to uk from us site annoyingly. It worked out at around £150 including
a ram mount and 12v cable. Someone more knowledgable might tell us
it's flawed, but just in case not and it helps someone else.

You have factored in the cost of the European maps, I assume?

It'll be great as long as you don't want to use it for finding your way
from A to B on roads.

Thanks, i thought it was ok (given correct maps) at giving simple
directions by road, turn by turn, etc, but it couldn't do voice
    commentary, "take next exit," etc?

Like i said i'm clearly no expert, and probably should have asked here
    first.

Not according to the few reviews I read. If that's what you bought it
for, I suggest you bung it on ebay without even opening it & get
something more suited to the job.

Ok thanks for the info. It's a new toy, and i'll have a play with it
    either way.

I've switched to Copilot on my HTC Desire for use in the car. Stumped up
for the maps of Europe and found it not at all bad finding my way round
the Puy de Sancy on 'D' roads by two completely different routes - which
actually made sense given the slightly different starting points only a
few Kms apart. The only fail was it not knowing the D36 Col de la Croix
Saint Robert road wasn't open (too much snow), but how could it?

The bonus was swivelling the Desire round in its sucker on to windscreen
mount and doing a video of the twisty road up to 'the chateau'. As this
was done with SWMBO in the car, in a light drizzle and quickly catching
up a SO Clio, however, it isn't worth watching.

Bike use may not be so practical until I have acquired a decent helmet
    bluetooth ear piece thingy.

    I'd search for this

(tomtom, "tom tom") (rider, rider2, "rider v2") europe* -urban

and yes it should exclude all searches that inclued "urban" but it
doesn't. I notice that the searches that include 'urban' all have a blue
stripe and 'see all listings' where the auction time should be. I
suspect it's ebay trying to be 'helpful' again
