    Shamelessly lifted from another place.

It seems that I may possibly have had an ancestor what was an Archer in
    medieval times and appears to have taken part here;

"Fought off Margate on 24 March 1387, the Battle of Cadzand (or Margate)
was a naval engagement between an English flotilla under Richard
Fitzalan, earl of Arundel, and a Franco-Flemish wine fleet. Besides
lowering the cost of wine in London..."

So, frog slotting and lowering the price of booze, what's not to like?

Anyhow, here's a searchable DB link:

    Interesting, but....

....lets (conservatively) call it 20 generations back to 1387 - that's
over 1 million direct ancestors when the pop. of England was approx. 2
    million.

So I reckon pretty much all of us here "may possibly have had an
ancenstor what was an Archer in medieval times."

Don't think you're unique in this, cos you're not!

either your maths is wrong, or you simply don't understand how long a
"generation" is. Do you really think people in the middle ages waited
until their 30s to have children?

I put my surname in and apparently there are 217 entries most of whom
    were archers.

That's why I said "conservatively". I thought about using 20 years,
i.e. 30 generations, but that meant I had more ancestors in 1387 than
    there were actual people!

  8. My ancestors didn't have nothing as common as an archer, my family had a
whole fucking regiment of them and one was the bloke who fired the arrow
what did for 'Arold he was and for that we got made into royalty and
became barons and was allowed to steal land and abuse peasants and we did
these things with much enthusiasm to the delight of our king and as a
result got even more favoured and was given a family crest with a lion
rampant on it and everything, until we got involved in shagging the wrong
wimmin and had it all taken away from us and became common like you lot.

    CT wibbled forthrightly:
Not sure I did. I do believe I've come from a line of Kings though.
    Bastards included.

  10. 20 years = 1 generation is the norm when working this stuff out.

well, let's at least allow him "descended from Australopithecus
Afarensis" status, out of charity if nothing else.

Troo, but clearly not you. Mine, however, is on "the list" and I think
slotting Auvaches ancestors when it was all the rage is commendable.
I'm not from some "Johnny-come-lately" bloodline you know.
Lowering the price of booze was obviously the start of a long family
    history of public service, probably.
    Ner!
