This could perhaps be a YTC moment....

One is a pate, the other is what the pate is made from.

    As simple as that?

Do you eat foie gras in un-pate form? If so what form /does/ it take?

Why? I've never had foie gras.

I'm aware of what it's made of; just that I thought it was only eaten in
    a pate form.

I've seen it served fried. In fact on the last france trip it was on
just about every menu that way, so maybe it's a popular southern France
    thing.

IIRC it looks like a cross between a chicken liver and a cat poo. I had it
(foie gras, not cat poo) on top of a fillet steak once. It was all a bit
    average, really

Or duck, which is the more normal form around here, AFAIAA.
Lightly fried is quite common, yes, or lightly poached, depending on
    the desired texture.
It's an Alsace and a SW france thing, yes. Histories vary, but one
I've heard is that it's been popular in Alsace for donkey's years, and
was essentialy imported into the SW by Alsacien evacuees during WWII.

    Probably, almost certainly in fact.

Dunno about your claims for champ but of course you could tell the
difference, it is called flavour and the perception of it is by and
large a very individual thing but food is food and as this little sub
thread is about kids and their eating habits all I can say is that they
are exactly like adults except less well educated.

You know I almost feel like I've absorbed some of the culture here, next
thing you know they'll be throwing me out of the midlands for acting
    "foreign".

I really should start learning French off those Michel Thomas CDs so I
can make a better show of the next trip.

You say that, but when the Mother Ship lands to reclaim her chosen few,
the rest of us are deeply fucked.

I think my beard may help a little. I'm probably good to go is there
    isn't a pube inspection.

    I'll bet there is.
