As others have said, some cholesterol 'control' medications seem to
bring more obvious side effects than others. All the statins I was given
eventually made me feel tired, some also quickly gave me gut cramps that
didn't pass off after a week as the accompanying information suggested
    they should.

I'm on my second variety of fibrate now. Bezafibrate, in a time release
pill. I seem to be tolerating this one fairly well. The temptation is
still to stop taking them when anything else (cold etc.) makes me feel
grotty in hopes of the kind of resurgence in well being I experienced
when I came off the Lipitor, but I'm going to hold out until my next
test and see what the results are before reviewing the situation.

Given the activity he has been up to today I would be inclined to blame
that for the jelly legs. I found the muscle weakness whilst on statins
more insidious, and accompanied by a general feeling of weariness
whether doing a lot of physical activity or not.

In the final analysis it's a trade off between quality of life and
longevity. No doubt the surgery nurse has shown him the predicted
percentage reduction in life span given his diet and lifestyle if he
doesn't reduce his 'number', but given his recent treatment cholesterol
control may be even more important, as Hog alluded to.

I dropped the statins altogether a few months before the glucophage came on.
I know this sounds a bit trite and a sample group of one means SFA but I.
took some old fashioned advice and for a couple of months now and after
binning the statins I've troughed a FOAD size bowl of porridge oats 6 of 7
mornings a week (1). I feel considerably better, BG has dropped from
hovering on 14 to 6 and the cholestorol dropped. Strange world.

    (1) I should add I also changed my diet a bit to go from 1500 to 1000kCal

No problem here, i have been on them for several years.
Alternatives are available for the very few people who have problems, the
doctor will change the prescription if needed.

The cheap ones give a significant percentage of takers, muscle pains,
cramp and in my case memory loss.

Go to the docs and get them changed.

I bought a house with an asbestos cement barn roof. The council will
take the sheets at the recycling depot, come the time. No problem.

As quality of life ebbs away the urge to strive for longevity goes with it.

Whilst infirmity is held at bay, the thirst for longevity is as strong
    as ever.

An older friend of mine came up with a convincing phrase regarding
ageing: "When it doesn't hurt in the morning - that's because you died
    in the night".

Yeah, cos Labour never did that, did they? Or the Whigs. Bastards. And
as for the Ugg-Mmmmmgh Party of 14,000 BC, don't get me started!

You know that quote about "everything the papers print is true, unless
    you know something about it."?

    That's you, that is.

Oh Labour buried the one on school funding. In collusion with one of
the teaching unions. That wasn't one of mine though, I only did a
couple of interviews for it. My colleague still rants about it, though
is now ranting more about one of hers that she can't publish on
because, guess what, the department are sitting on it.
    Shocking case of hirsute privilege.
They covered up BSE in wooly mammoths you know. Bastards.
    <sulk> Is not.

Is too. What you need is a post-modernist neo-feminist commentary on the
capitalist running-dogs and their vicious oppression of the proletariat
as it compares to the anarcho-syndicalist Utopia that surely awaits
those who can cast off the shackles of suburban realism.

Get your tits out in protest, that'll do it everytime.

    Post photos.

    When I was young, I figured I'd die before I turned 35. If I didn't, I
    wasn't living hard enough. Well, I'm 62 now. I've had a full,
productive, and enjoyable life. There isn't much left that I really
want to accomplish. If I die in my sleep tonight, I won't have many
regrets. And I've often said that when life stops being fun, I'll put
an end to it. But I'm having more fun now than ever, even if my body
is a bit more infirm. It friggin scares me that I might still be
having fun when I'm four score.

    Nice topic for further research.
A PhD on reports that have been commissioned then bent or buried to suit

Bet there's neither the time nor the paper for such never ending work.
