OT talk geek to me - torrents and networked external hard drives?

Some rooms were fitted only with the old 5A sockets to avoid toasters
and heaters being plugged in - first thing everybody did was make an
adapter lead up to plug their stereo into.
There was a kitchen on each floor, for every umm... 6 rooms, iirc. No
bugger used it, preferring to trip the breaker occasionally by plugging
    toasters into the 5A sockets.

Yebut, they were shite. The Atari 80 kicked arse and IIRC, the 512 floppy
drive was something like 500 quid retail. I bought a "Happy Drive" for mine
too, but the price had dropped considerably by then. I can't believe they're
around a tenner these days and can only imgaine the number of heart attacks
that would've been reported had such things as terabyte HD's even been
    mentioned as a possibility.

I eventually bought a Scuzzi HD for an Atari ST (120meg) and it took forever
to fill it, but it died just before it was full. That made me think about
    back-ups for the first time.

We had two different types of smoke detector in hall. The rooms and
kitchen had ones that wouldn't be triggered by cigarette smoke,
    whereas the hallway would.

I'd be surprised if they weren't allowed to smoke in their rooms,
surely it's not counted as a workplace?

It's just easier to find stuff as it's presented in an organised format. As
Bear pointed out a few weeks ago, for current stuff they have a very quick
turnaround between the broadcast and the torrent upload.

    <slap> Pull yourself together.

My sister bought her eldest a mini-fridge to keep in his room, so no-one
else would steal his "milk" from the fridge in the shared kitchen.

That's a good scam: one for each resident in halls.

What's the position if you only download stuff, legally, from iplayer,
    itv.com etc?

Noise isn't an issue as the fans in it are quiet and able to change
speed. It consumes about 300W. I suspect the dedicated NAS box you're
thinking off could be run from a large lemon with one copper and one
    zinc strip stuck in it.

Erm, my output rating is ~1.3kW rms, haven't tried to figure out or
measure the power consumption. Not going to either.

Toasty. I don't suppose it'll be pulling that all the time, but it's
made up of 1kW for the big plasma, 500W for the amp, then a lot of
little stuff: the PS3, SkyHD box, PS2, the odd DVD player and the
legacy VHS player. A bunch of the less frequently used gear is on a
separate circuit, so is left properly switched off most of the time.
I must get one of those plug-in jobbies that measures current draw.
I wish. Hot to the touch, all of it.

    Have new amp, these days:

    http://www.testfreaks.co.uk/receivers/pioneer-vsx-lx70/

It's positively green compared to the Arcams, that were capable of
doing ~300W each and there was three of them.
    Looks like a plan.
The plasma draws loads, but does similar stuff to yours when it gets
bored, and also only does 1W on standby - which is just as well, as in
common with most modern gear, you can't turn it off unless you flip
the switch at the wall socket.

Well 300W is what is stamped on the side of the PSU. I haven't
plugged-in the gizmo that actually measures it.
    Much better.
