Salad Dodger, AW, weren't you in this?

They've let my daughter fire a gun with real bullets. Is this normal
on your very first session? They'll let her up in a plane as well. I'm
not convinced this is a good idea.

Being somewhat of a pacifist I'd rather she hadn't joined. Hey ho.

    Sounds about right.
What's the problem in going up in a plane, after all it's the ATC! ;o)

I'd be more worried if she was going out for tootle in a nuclear sub!!

and me, it was compulsory to be in the CCF in school
Yes. I represented the school at Bisley, shooting .303 rifles. We had our
own .22 range in acellar. I also went to Filton and flew Chipmunks.
Those were the good bits. I only went yomping around Sennybridge the once.
I dodged out of any further activities involving mud & running.

  5. When my eldest was in the air cadets she got to fly in several aircraft
and helicopters she loved every minute of it , she was pretty good with
the guns as well , then again she could strip a semi auto pistol when
she was 10 years old , but some nut called hamilton screwed all that up

Likewise. My school had an indoor range. ATC had a range too and we fired
both caliber rifles and (IIRC) Webley .22 revolvers.

    It's fun.
It's also a handy skill to have if she decides to kill someone in the
    future.
Hey, she may even become a Para.

SD and I were Royal Auxiliary Air Force, ie air force TA rather than
Air Training Corps. No, we certainly didn't fire live weapons on the
first day, we spent the day attesting, being allocated a billet and
learning the first rudiments of drill but then we were supposed to be
becoming part of the "real" air force. I'd imagine the ATC has a hard
job keeping hold of its recruits so they need to invest a little in
getting them to be enthused early on. Making school kids walk at
right angles for the first 6 months would probably be a good way to
lose them all. I wouldn't worry about the weapons, they will be
tightly controlled and arguably a kid trained to know what a real
weapon can do and how it should be handled will be safer than a bunch
of kids messing around with an air rifle. I was a farm kid so was
hanlding shotguns from a very early age but I was taught immediately
that guns weren't toys and I've always had a respect for guns as a
result. If you are worried I'm sure the unit will show you their
    procedures and so on.

Cheeky cow! Me and the Wegster was in the RAuxAF. ATC for growed-ups.

    Yes.
It wasn't in 1975. At least, not in my squadron.

From memory, I fired 50 or 60 rounds, spread over three annual camps.
    Neither was this.

I had a single trip in a hairyplane in six years in the RAuxAF, as did
    Andrew.

We spent most of the time making Airfix kits, and catching up on
    homework.
    I can't think why.
It's about as military as the WI.

  11. She is short and they need[1] them short in the paras.
'ere didn't I heard it somewhere on the Hinternet or something that the
average height of scrotes has gone up in Colchester since they moved the
paras in there. It has had the effect of culling the local population
not just the scrotes as the army is wont to do but the short arse
    scrotes in particular.

Plus, we got to *clean* the engine cowlings of a Royal Flight
    Andover. Whoo-pee-doo.
This is the ATC rather than Auggies, yes? Though we may as well have

Or, we were. I can't help thinking after all that whittling down of
how ever many applicants they had, they must have been a bit
disapointed at the rebellious lot they ended up with,

I was in the ATC as a lad and I can confirm that going to the firing range
and firing .22s at targets was a very common activity.

Unfortunately the range only had enough space for about a third of the group
and they had no idea what to do with the remainder of the group who weren't
    there.

My other recollections of my service, before I got bored and gave it up as a
    bad job are:

    1. The high-tech security procedures to stop teenagers pinching live ammo
was to make them promise that they wouldn't.

    2. We had a radio operator with a terrible stutter who wouldn't let anybody
    else use the radio.

    3. At camp a voluntary pre-dinner short walk turned into 10 miles of being
utterly lost in the pissing rain. I swear I have never been so cold in my
    life.

Anyway, I soon decided it wasn't the life for me ... possibly because I
    could read AND write.

The most terrifying thing I've seen in a long while was when a mate of a
mate who's a born townie, never held any kind of gun before in his life
type, had a go with an air rifle. We all made the mistake of assuming that
everyone just knew what you did and didn't do as it'd been so drilled into
    us as kids.
