The Magnum was a lovely bit of kit; heavy is the hand
but it felt lovely to hold. It looked like precision
engineering - everything fitted well and the parts moved
effortlessly when it was cocked. Almost a work of art.

Especially when compared to the rattly POS AK47 that jammed
    after just about every round!

It'd better be the members or I want to know where my money's been
    going.

I always think that arguing the pros and cons of union membership on
here is pretty pointless because for every good point put forward some
muppet will complain because "they didn't want to know when my mate
was sacked for hitting his manager" or "unions were ruining this
country until maggie made them pointless by making the members
    unemployed".

First, there would be no anti-discrimination legislation if unions
hadn't pushed for it in the first place. Secondly, the problem is that
the law makes it illegal to discriminate but it needs trade unions to
enforce that law by bringing cases.
We do, but we also need to push for a legal framework that makes it
    possible.

Start by repealing the anti-union legislation of the Thatcher years,
continue by supporting highly skilled work, expand the public service,
give unions a right to a seat on the board of companies, ...

He has the right to tell you what to do only if it is fits within what
is acceptable business practice for your industry and employers. And
even then, you have the right to disagree with him if for example you
have more pertinent information about the situation to hand.

  9. Unions make a good counterbalance for management abuse. However - when
the pendulum swings one way or the other (towards management as it was
pre-unions or in the late 80's or towards unions as it was late 70's)
    then bad things happen.

And no system is pefect - anyone who thinks it is is a deluded fool..

Out of curiosity, is it still the case that if you breach any
watertight compartment in a sub, the thing sinks and doesn't come up
again? Or can they float with one (or even more) compartment open to
the sea? ISTR reading that some subs are designed to take a single
torpedo hit and survive, but it sounds unlikely.

    Anyone know for sure?

  13. Ditto. Not a couple of hundred, just a few dozen. The 'Armoury' was a
deep cupboard at the back of the Head's office, afair.
Heh. Now that really rings a bell.
I've told how somebody found a box of old WW1 .303 ammo which had twice
the kick of the stuff we were using - thinking about it now, it's more
likely the ATC issue stuff was half-charged for practice purposes.

nope. let me start by mentioning that I know next to nothing about
firearms. I'm only here for the "word definition" argument, and I'll
put it in terms that you and I share.
The first definition of "respect" is "in relation or reference" to
something i.e. "in respect of the previous version of the project
    plan".

The definition that Sweller and others are using in respect[1] to
firearms is the second definition of "respect" : "giving particular
attention or consideration" i.e. "In planning the project, I had to
respect the deadlines of other parts of the programme".

The "deference" aspect of the word "respect" is only the 3rd level
definition of the word : "high or special regard" i.e. "I respect so-
and-so as a Project Manager because of his consistently good
    performance".

There's a fourth defintion too: particular or detail i.e. "The Project
Plan is good in some respects".

    HTH, motherfucker.

I think it'd depend on where it was holed and what was damaged by the
ingress of seawater. I'll ask next time on working on the new build.

We had the choice of the "original Russian" AK47 (which
was probably an AK74 anyway) or the Czech made version
which was certainly an AK74M. We fired the "original
Russian" version for authenticity and it was pretty
ropey compared to some of the weapons there, but still
    good fun ;-)

When I was working in SA we had a mini armoury in the offices that
contained a couple of assault rifles and a similar amount of 'riot'
shotguns with shortened barrels and a 6 shot magazine. These were for
use when we were working in the black townships and were often
subjected to a spot of rock chucking by the locals.

All the service engineers had access to the armoury via a couple of
hefty locks and we often took the guns out to go and shoot bottles on
top of the massive slag heaps surrounding Jo'burg. Obviously this was
frowned on so the usual game was to log ammunition as being used when
we were working and keep it back for the boozed up target practice.

I run my team as a pseudo-democracy - one where I have more votes than
the the people who report to me (of course) but one where if I'm about
to do something stupid I expect them to stop me..

And I *want* them to disagree with me if I'm going to do something
    stupid.
