You need a Visa to visit Russia.

You need to be invited (Someone offering you a work-place, or a place
within college or some-such) in order to obtain a Visa.

You get one visa in, one visa out. So, should you wish to visit a
place that is outside of the boundaries of Russia, it's the long way
    home I'm afraid.

I've been looking into this for a trip to Kaliningrad.

Yes, and tourist visas are readily available.
A hotel will arrange a tourist visa.
He'll be entering Russia at the Polish-Russian border, at which point
he'll be stamped "in". He'll go to Moscow, have a pleasant few days,
and drive back to the Russian-Polish border, at which point he'll be
    stamped "out".

    What's so hard about this?

Rubbish. As Blaney, said, tourist visas are readily available from hotels or
from a number of specialist travel agents.

Err, wrong again. I had one visa. It's still in my passport actually.

I only had one visa which was originally a 28 day single visit one
that I had replaced with a 12 month multiple visit visa simply by
making a phone call. What made it even better was that my original
visa wasn't for Russia but the replacement one allowed me into the
country. Working on a part Russian JV had it's good points.
