It might be the lowest bandwidth one for you. It won't be for anyone
strip-mining the binary groups for warez, which is no doubt why they
    throttle it.

I thought Pipex were a 1/2 decent business class ISP. Don't they have
    a separate non-binaries newsserver?

In the sense of being a decent ISP, they were, yonks ago. Then they were
bought by a firm who were snapping up ISPs and hosting firms left, right
and centre and rebranded once they'd acquired the Pipex brand. I just
have no idea what their NNTP server arrangements are like.

I have been down that route and the answer is "**** all". I was
*promised* by tech support a written response within 48 hours, which
would have been last Thursday, and still nothing. I did go via
"customer services" and I got a response that; (a) didn't address my
complaint, and (b) suggested any further comments should be returned
via a Tiscali web form. Clever sods, the Tiscali security isn't setup
for Pipex customers, so you cannot logon. So I sent them a reply by
email and again their response did not address my comments.

So, in summary (and like others have also commented), Pipex are
    useless.

Yes they do have a text only newsserver, but Tiscali have put all NNTP
traffic in the same class as binaries, P2P, torrent, etc according to
the one intelligent life-form I spoke to on their help desk.

"Were" is the right term, I think. They certainly were when I signed
up with them a few years ago. In the last couple of years, and
especially since the Tiscali purchase, their standards have gone down
like a randy schoolteacher on one of his pupils.
If they did, they never told me about it.

  10. They were in the dim and distant past - before they got bought up by
    pikey penny-pinchers & lawyers.
