I just bought that £599 Philips tv from comet. Spent 10 hours returning it,
    replacements and more.

Got my money back. Am hoping a friend can get me a Bravia at a decent price.

Anyway, am selling my stereo and am hoping the Roku I just ordered will work
well. However will need a decent stereo system for my television. Is there a
bit of kit to allow me to connect a Roku via m DAAP server.

    Advice appreciated.

"Don't buy Philps" is as good as I can do at the moment.

What was wrong with it? I've got an LG LCD one, it's lovely.

They both went into factory mode, and when resetting they just locked up in
DTV mode and a blank screen. Couldn't change source or anything. Must admit
it's a bit annoying having gone back to my old tv. It's tiny. :(

So, what I'm trying to do is replace all my stereo bits (big B&W floor
standing speakers etc) with something that'll work as a decent sound system
for my new tv (when I manage to get one) and also as a stereo speaker
system. I have no idea what to go for. Should I just get a small stereo
system or should I go for a surround sound system? Won't really need CD
player and radio etc ... it's just the amp and speakers I will need.

    Thanks

It's good advise, I've never found their stuff to be any use to be honest.
Last Philips stuff I had to deal with was some DVD/RW in a batch of work
    Dells.

All of them had to be replaced (with a mix of Sony and, I think, Lite-On
    units) under warranty.

I've gone the amp and seperate speakers route in here. In front of the 42"
TV, you can convince yourself you're at the cinema :). Surround sound
rocks, and doesn't have to be too expensive. The beauty is the amp uses an
optical feed from the DVD player and automatically goes into the mode (Dolby
/ DTS etc) that the DVD is outputting - which always impresses me.

Yup. Must have a look about for any JVC offers.
Nope, I've got a network drive with which I shall be streaming my MP3's via
DAAP. Just ordered a Roku Soundbridge which will be very nice, I hope.

Now I just want a surround sound system that'll be relatively well priced
that I can put the TV and the Roku through. Don't really want to have to
trail loads of wires around the place, however.
    I'm getting closer.

Keep the B&Ws if they are good. Get three more smaller speakers for rear
and centre, preferably smaller ones from the same B&W range, from eBay.
You probably won't need a subwoofer if the fronts have decent bass,
in fact any cheap sub would be worse. Then all you need is a reasonable
5.1 amp from Rotel or the like and Bob's your uncle.

  10. You might wish to take a gander at Samsung as well. Totally agree on the
Sony front, I love mine - they've always done superb TVs. Having done a bit
of staring at the things of late, the Samsung offering looks pretty good
    too.

Problem is that they are too big and too bassy for my flat. They really are
house speakers. So, I think I'll just replace the lot.

I got the speakers for next to nothing 15 years ago, so I don't mind selling
as anything will be a profit.

  12. I spent a happy morning upgrading my audio gear - and as catman suggested,
    Audio T were excellent.

We've got Acoustic Research speakers, which we're keeping. So, I was looking
for summat to replace the old Quad gear, which is quietly dying after twenty
five years. The nice Audio T man set up some Denon gear and Arcam.

Blimey. The Denon was nice enough, but I was boggled at how much *better*
the Arcam was - and yes, I know it's a fair bit more money, but Himself and
I weren't convinced our lugholes would hear the difference. Very wrong
indeed on that. A bigger and far more detailed sound, somehow. Shop manager
reckons it's the difference between Japanese and British. <shrug>

    Arcam gear rocks. Literally.

I'm more than happy with the room-filling (and heating) capabilities
of my DAVE(1)-equipped Alpha 10 integrated, backed up with an Alpha 10
power(2) and P3 amps. Maybe a bit long in the tooth now, but unless
Meridian or Musical Fidelity suddenly drop their prices, I'm sticking
with it and I'd recommend Arcam to anybody.

That's the problem, I don't really know. All I know is that I want to be
able to have great sound from my tv and from my mp3 collection. I've ordered
the Roku, and it has numerous outputs.
See, I'm not really sure what that all means.
Sod them, this is for me.

If I wanted a simple, high quality surround sound and stereo system inna box,
_with_money_no_object_ I would seriously take a look at the Naim n-Vi.

Back on Planet Richer Sounds, the Azur 640R home cinema receiver, along with
the DVD89 HDMI DVD player looks like a good combo. A cheap one-box solution
is the Nad L73, but that doesn't have HDMI output.

Getting good stereo CD playback out of a home cinema setup used to be
something of a black art unless you threw loads of money at the problem.
Things are getting better I think, but if you're only planning to play back
MP3s your music audio quality comes pre-nadgered, so probably not worth
    worrying about.

I've decided to go for a Toshiba. We've had good tellies from them in the
past. John Lewis are price matching .... nice :)

That's the one. It's amazing to thind that only six months ago it was pretty
much twice todays price. Glad I waited.

  19. Nowt wrong with them as a brand. The good thing about JL is that they offer
a free extended warranty, too. Five years, iirc?

    Alison Hopkins tossed off:
It's all a bit tedious really, combi oven died 2 days before xmyth,
engineer booked for 27th, never turned up, said he'd then be here 28th,
didn't turn up so I got slightly shouty on the 28th.

Give them their due, I have had a response to my eamial of earlier
today, unfortunately it is not acceptable so a response has been sent
    informing them of this.

I await their next move with some interest.
