  1. It may look horizontal, but it's part of a parabola, which is why the
LNB is sitting down the bottom. Look at it and imagine the missing part
and see where it's really pointing.

  2. Sorry, bit of bollocks there, but it's sort of what I'm getting at.

If you look at the dish from the LNB's pov, and see how (if you were to
act as transmitter) the waves from you would strike the dish and bounce
off over your head towards the sky.

There isn't much in the way between the satellite and the dish.

The dish will have a much higher gain than the freeview antenna (aided
by the frequency of operation allowing smaller antenna for a given
    gain.)

    Parabolic antennas, innit: Gain = h(p D / l )2, or something.

I looked at it very closely today whilst fitting a quad LNB, & as
expected, something's fucked up. I now have one wire going into the Sky
box, & one going into the PC DVB-S card. I now can't get any of the
Astra 2D channels through the Sky box, but get them all fine through
    the DVB-S card. WTF?

I've reset the LNB on the Sky box, which didn't help, then did a full
new install, which also didn't help. All the other channels are fine.

Does this mean the LNB the Sky box is plugged into is fucked, or does
'quad LNB' mean a single one with four outputs? I suppose I should try
swapping the leads, but that would probably make everything blow up.

Try the known good cable in the Sky box and make sure all's well.

Check the ends of the cable to make sure that there's no stray shielding
which might be causing a short circuit.

Try the cable in a different LNB output. They're all independent so it's
possible, but unlikely, that one is knacked.

    I've just found http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/page10.htm & get no
signal on the manual tuning step, so I reckon it's just the extra
weight making the arm sag a fraction. I'll try hoiking it up a tad with
    a bit of wire tomorrow.

Unlikely maybe, but that was the problem. Ports 1-3 are fine, but no
Astra 2D on 4. I'll leave it be as I doubt I'll ever need more than the
    2 I'm using now.

  10. It's not that unusual to find one of the outlets pegging it on a quad,
especially a cheapy off ebay. Same thing happened here - I suspect they
were a dodgy batch but it was so cheap I'm not bothered, only using two
of them and later three, anyway.
