  1. The head is broken on the mongvan.

If they can't find me a second hand replacement it is going to cost the
thick end of a grand to supply and fit a shiny new one from Mr Toyota.

Just as well I quite like that van, I am going to be keeping it for
*years* if I am to get me monies worth out of it. Anyone up for a game
    of Minx-or-Munter?

'Car Parts Mart' is very good as well - 99p from your local newsagents.
Any street where they see an identical model parked at the side of the road?

  6. In uk.rec.motorcycles, steve auvache amazed us all with this pearl of
    wisdom:
Get the air-con regassed while you're at it.
    What's minx-or-munter? Spot the Hillman?

You are joking, I ain't having the air-con on on that thing ever again,
I can't afford the extra diesel nor am I prepared to put up with the

    steve auvache says...
That could well have been down to the fact the head was fucked. In
previous cars I've run the air-con made very little difference to fuel
    consumption.

Snot a car, it is a Lite-Ace van. Many, many cubic feet to cool and
fitted with separate systems back and front. Having it full on asks a
lot of power from the system, power that is marginal over 80 anyway.

In modern cars I agree, but I remember the aircon in my XJS 3.6 made a
_huge_ difference. If you were sitting at idle and it kicked in it
would drop the tickover by about 200rpm. If you were just pullilng
away at the time it wasn't unheard of for it to die completely.

That amount of engine load must have made a significant difference to
the mpg. Then again, it was always so low anyway that I wouldn't
    actually have notice :-}

Sir may not be aware of the DIY aircon topup option. Available at larger
Halfrauds in spite of the website not owning up.

Hmmm. Difficult comparison to make with proper climate-control
systems, as you're never really aware of when the A/C is actually on.
And thinking of the Volvo's consumption in summer vs. winter, it's
also confused by different driving. In winter we do lots of
distance+twisty mountain roads, with a ****-off roof box on, whereas
summer includes some more town work... actually, probably not that
    much more.

I suppose that the fact that we get about the same (24mpg) with the
roof box in winter and without it i summer might imply that the A/C
cancels out the roof box, but that's not exactly conclusive.
Sounds reasonable. Certainly A/C isn't the gas-guzzler it once was.

Sir doesn't give a shit about air conditioning, Sir can always open a
window. In fact as Sir smokes whilst driving, having rolled the fags
before the journey, Sir habitually drives it with window open anyway and
air conditioning is thus a pointless additional half a hundredweight to
carry around. Although convenient when Sir has passengers who have
    trouble breathing.

Sir is obviously aware of the lubrication required in the compressor, wether
    in use or not.

Has Sir considered these for his passengers?(1)
