I have a nice new Win2008R2 server in our domain, unfortunatly i also
have some old Win95 boxes which need to connect to this, thankfully
they are on a seperate vlan and away from internet access.

I can ping the server ok, i can connect win98 boxes ok but not win95.

    Anybody have an idea???

    Windows 95?

The OS that went end-of-support almost a decade ago?

I think you're trying to solve the wrong problem.

I know i am, but to replace the piece of equipment which it runs is
best part of a quarter of a million squids, so were making do while it
works fine until it goes pop, hence my requirement to connect to this
server so the bods can save there data to it.

ISTR there being an AD client for Win 9x on the Windows 2003 server CD
but I don't have one to be able to check. That may get you partly working
but M$ could also have turned on encrypted Netbios (I think) by default
in Server 2008 (and is the only option i.e. you can't disable it) which
may really bugger you up as by my dim recollection I don't think you can
enable that on with Win9X clients.

I would have thought that Netbios also needs to be installed/enabled (on
the server) as does WINS (on the DC) for the Win 9X clients to be able to
find the server. Rather than installing WINS (I don't think it is
available for server 2008) you should be ok with just specifying the
server within the lmhosts file (In the Windows folder) but I can't
    remember the syntax... something like:

    192.168.1.1 server PRE DOM:domain.local
Aha, see this for some details about it:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180094

After all the faffing about it may be simpler to configure an FTP site on
the Server2008 box and configure the Win 95 clients to dump their data
there and have them using local rather than domain accounts. That way you
only need IP connectivity & DNS name resolution working for whatever FTP
client you are going to use and that will be working or you'd have a load
of errors and problems getting XP/Vista & Win7 clients to talk to the
    server.

That would be my approach as well - stick to a simply protocol and
forget about windows shares. An alternative would be to run a nightly
rsync batch job if FTP is too fiddly.

JHFC. I've not even booted mine up for a good 6 years or so.

I occasionally put W98SE on a really quick processor for a laugh, but
mostly I only need such venerable OS's to run programs that have tight
coupling with the underlying hardware [1]

    Paul.

[1] e.g. to run very old games that won't virtualise or emulate.

    Googled guess.

Disable Raw SMBs on the server by editing it's Registry as follows:

    1. Run Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE).
    2. From the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following key:
    \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
    3. From the Edit menu choose Add Value.
    4. Add the following:

Value Name: EnableRaw Data Type: REG_DWORD Data: 0

When you first built the server at first logon, (the bit where you are
made to change the admin password) it tells you that the current
iteration of SMB wont work with older clients, and then tells you wat
    to do about it.

I see others have found the right link to fix.

  11. I think you need to turn off server-side SMB signing.
