Giving up caffeine is pretty bad if you go cold turkey, assuming you're
a triple espresso man rather than a milksop. But there is no temptation
to start again if you don't realize that it's the lack of drugs making
you feel so bad. I wonder if a spot of hypnosis to make an addict forget
what it is that he's addicted to would work.

 

A mate has offered to swap any opiates I have left over for speed...

I just need something to keep my mouth ocupied but it's 150 miles

One of my lungs mostly stops working properly if I breath second hand
smoke. So it must be bad.

 

I had to give up caffene lately, funnily enough, due to some drugs I am

I've not had one today (coffee + fag + routine) and haven't had the
killer withdrawal headache I was expecting. Though that does shed new
light on why i can barely keep my eyes open.

I think you're probably wrong on this.

Addiction is not a conscious link between the 'positive effect' and the
substance to which one is addicted AIUI.

Not as such. If you really don't know what's making you feel shit then
you're not going to know how to fix it, are you?

But of course it's all very simplistic, as you clearly do know what
the problem is.

Then again, I've always felt (as an ex and now very occasional, but
never addicted, smoker) that it's mostly in the mind.

I always liked Rob's[1] guide to giving up smoking - "It's simple;
every time you want to have a cigarette, don't have one."
