On Thu, 21 Aug 2008 15:43:41 +0100, "Slower Than You" Finally got around to going to have a look.
Google for "Rational Recovery". He may be annoying, smug, American with a big nose and a silly beard - but he has broadly the right approach to addiction
Oh good grief he doesn't. I agree with him to a certain extent about the 'addictive voice' but to say there are no psychobiosocial factors is absolute hokum. I'm on page 8 of the little quiz thing and it is quite frankly a joke, all assertion, no evidemce.
for people like myself (and, I suspect, Lady Nina) who tend towards logic and deep analysis
Yes, so I'm aware of the actual, proper, peer reviewed, scientific research in this area.
of their addictive behaviour, IMO.
His site seems to have started from alcoholism and he's incredibly anti the disease model and 12 step groups. The one thing he does have right is individual responsibility, but the sort of addicts he seems to be aiming at will have given that up some time ago and his 'no, you're wrong' is in no way going to sway anyone's behaviour. Give the guy an insight into change management, a pile of scientific reading and a style transplant and he might be of use. If it works for you - fine - I like a little more rigour in my logic. I'm still not smoking. Yeast extract flavoured rice cakes are foul.
