Finally got around to going to have a look.
Oh good grief he doesn't. I agree with him to a certain extent about
the 'addictive voice' but to say there are no psychobiosocial factors
is absolute hokum. I'm on page 8 of the little quiz thing and it is
quite frankly a joke, all assertion, no evidemce.
Yes, so I'm aware of the actual, proper, peer reviewed, scientific
    research in this area.
His site seems to have started from alcoholism and he's incredibly
anti the disease model and 12 step groups.

The one thing he does have right is individual responsibility, but the
sort of addicts he seems to be aiming at will have given that up some
time ago and his 'no, you're wrong' is in no way going to sway
    anyone's behaviour.

Give the guy an insight into change management, a pile of scientific
reading and a style transplant and he might be of use.

If it works for you - fine - I like a little more rigour in my logic.

I'm still not smoking. Yeast extract flavoured rice cakes are foul.

    *nice*

I suppose I should be vaguely proud that I made Cane reach for the
    mind bleach.

And again in English? Or do I have to kick the boy out of his pit to
    translate?

    Really? Never occurred to me.
Now they tell me! Where were you with this sage advice when I was 16,
    you bastards?

    <thinks>

Does it still work if you're 48?

I can drum well enough, but I have no decent drums here.
Pah, 10 minutes. Dad takes about 2 minutes feeling how it works then
belts out something amazing, all without any sight.

One of the most amusing ones was someone passing him the horn/trumpet
cross overs you see at football matches and him doing Flanders and
Swann's 'I found a french horn and I started to play it' followed by
    bits from 'Tubby the tuba'

    Ooooo lookee

I fundamentally disagree with this. Hearing is a skill just like any
other - you can learn it.

This is an argument that will have no resolution. I'm just contending
that pretty much everyone has, or can develop fairly easily, the motor
    skills and timing.

    Champ, Aug 22, 2008
  12. Really? Do you have any proof of this?

I know quite a number of people who have no musical ability whatsoever.
They can't even use the one instrument that everyone should be able to
use (their voice) to sing along with a guitar or organ because they
simply cannot tell any real difference between one note and another.
Play them a middle-C and a middle-F and they can't tell you whether the
notes are different or by how much.

This I know from personal experience of trying to teach someone to sing
so that he doesn't sound like a dying crow..

Of course not. This is usenet, after all. But it would seem bizarre
to me that one particular skill (or lack of) was inborn, where just
about every other seems to be related to learning and practice.

"The more I practice, the luckier I get"
That article equivicates massively, but (to my reading of it) tends to
the view that tone-deafness is not an inborn medical condition.

The high incidence of perfect pitch among blind people would tend to
    support the learning theory.
I know several blind piano tuners who cannot play.

It still works when you're 60.

As for the guitar, another story innit?

Well it IS pretty straightforward to pick up a couple or three chords and
bang 'em out, but whether or not it's tuneful is something else altogether.

Not lost, merely mislaid. It's down the back of the sofa with half dozen

If it's any use, I played "Hey Jude" within 5 minutes of sitting in front of
a piano. Learning "Root Beer Rag" took considerably longer mind.
