  1. <VBG> Can't say I am remotely surprised - aren't the general public
    wonderful?

He said most moderate of its time", not that it a benevolent uncle.

Compared to the "LFE" frogs, wonderful Belgian, Spanish, and
developing Merkin empires, the BE was a moderate empire. Still
dreadful, but not *as* bad. Well, not everywhere.

Oh, and the problems in the ME are down to arguments about who has the
best imaginary friend, not the British Empire.

By the your line of logic, it must also be the fault of the Ottomans,
    for not winning the war.

It's not as if it was a little Utopia in 1917.

its not desperate enough to contact embassies. they're a couple and we
know one of them is ok and the other is being sorted.

it would just be good to know that they're ok and if we could help.

Embassies are one of the things you pay for with you taxes. If piece
of mind is what you need then that's what they're there for.

NP, I'm just going to have a word with the BiL now (as SWMBO is on the
phone to her sister). I'll keep you in the know.

BiL is going to look into it. If [1] he finds anything out, I'll let
    you know by email.

[1] It's an *if* atm, so don't put money on it just yet.

  11. I wasn't just talking about the Israel/Arab conflicts but about the
various Arab/Arab problems. Take Iraq for example - it is an entirely
manufactured country, set up by the British out of lots of (fairly
incompatible) tribes and then given to whoever could pay the most for
    it.

The Arab/Israel situation wasn't helped by the actions of the British
towards the end of their Mandate though.

A bit like places like Zimbabwe or Kenya.
Which war? The one in the 1400's where they trounced the Byzantines
(after the Crusaders had done most of their work for them..). The ones
    in the 1700's?

The point is this: with power comes responsibility.
Indeed it was't. It's probably one of the most fought-over areas in the
world. And has been for several thousand years.

  12. Got your message when I got home from the pub last night, erm, this morning.

Might as well kill this thread now as we're starting to upset the locals.

Let me know by email if you learn owt.

The daft thing is, wherever they are, I could be there in 2 hours.

WEll I'm on record agreeing utterly with the point that the BE was
utterly incompetent in partitioning or forming nations when it was time
    to go.

India/Pakistan: the worst example of all, but then Mountbatten didn't
GAF or have the ability to do better
    <others>
Ireland: the closest **** up to home and causing most trouble within
blighty, some sympathy though given the parallel need to prosecute/mop
    up WWI

    Adie,

Have you been fired? I've tried "Adie"/"Adrienne" dot Bonwick at roche
dot come and "Adie"/"Adrienne" dot "Maidenname" at roche dot com.

    None of these work.

I've dropped an email to you at your personal addy too, with Andy and
    Paul on cc.

Bruce, can you give Adie a knock for us please, in case she doesn't see
    this.
