So... a dead body is reported and a detective comes out to look at the
scene so the body can be taken to the mortuary.

He looks around for a bit before announcing "this is a case of
suicide". The photographer stops and turns to him.
"Are you crazy? He's been shot several times... and there's a knife
    in his back!"

"Oh, he was very depressed" says the detective.

Obviously. Where else can three policeman shoot one guy with a knife
and have it decleared as self-defence for all of them?

Any resemblance to any person living or dead was coincidental.

BUT, NOW YOU'VE MENTIONED IT, you'd think they're trying to start a
riot judging by the way it's been handled by their PR people.

The police PR people coyly suggested that perhaps the victim was on
crack or ice ("the police sprayed him with capsicum and he didn't calm
down. An expert in capsicum spray says 'they often don't calm down if
they're on crack or ice'". Er! No toxicology report from the coroner
then? That would have been a) available and b) more convincing, but
sadly no further news on this). Then they suggested he was a Nazi,
before finally hitting on the idea that he was suicidal. Dialing
'000' and asking for the police can be equivalent to suicide you
know. Now, instead of mourning the death of a boy, the police are
    campaigning for Tasers.

There is no mention of the major issue that several shots were fired
in the park. The bullets travel in on a straight path and remain
lethal for up to a few KM. Surely one would've been enough? Am I
right in thinking they're on the 10-shot semis now?

BTW - I think the semis were issued after a shooting in May (a
policeman emptied his revolver in the CBD and had pause to reload),
the police started squawking 'this would never have happened if we had
    10-shot shooters'.

Hand gun projys drop quickly , you might be disappointed how short the
lethal range although there is no denial of the potential it is a lessor
    distance

  8. Bullets from a pistol are not lethal for a few kilometres as the previous
    suggested
They would be lucky to travel more than a kilometre

And given that three of them shot their weapons
weren't two of the three females?
Do they scare more easier or were they reacting to the sound of the other
    gunshot/s?

  9. I wrote a long post and then didn't bother, here's the skinny. A
standard 9mm (-ish) round, fired straight, probably won't travel further
than 500m and won't be lethal at the end. A 0.45" fired at 45 degrees (
or a bit less) might travel 2,500m, and will be lethal even then.

Using a firearm to disable or kill someone weilding a couple of kitchen
knives is disproportionate. If you accept that disproportionate force is
acceptable, there is nothing preventing you signing off on a nuke.

Amusing the way 'the public' expects the police to stand in between them
and the people who might harm them, and then criticize when the police
    react to protect themselves..

Lets not tell 'the public' how the soldiers we sent over to Iraq and
Afghanistan have probably killed many, many children.

no most of them still have the old revolvers I believe, the change
    over is very slow

    just random thoughts here

warning shots.. into the ground maybe?

kid with 2 knives, sprayed with pepper spray, warning shots all before
the fatal shot... what do the police have to do to try to stop it
without deadly force before using deadly force?

do we want a cop to be killed first before they use deadly force?

kid or not, he was capable of killing.

3 cops fired, could they all be wrong?

they was a report today that an "insider" commented that they were all
    aiming for the legs...

its a sad story which ever way you look at it, a woman has lost her
Husband and child within 3 yeras and they are at least 3 coppers that
arnt going to be quite right again, not all coppers are trigger happy
arseholes, some are just doing a job they love.

    Oh God here we go.
    http://www.theage.com.au/national/police-shot-first-to-hit-tylers-legs-20081215-6z1r.html

Now they are saying they shot at his legs, but when Tyler "continued
to advance" [after being shot in the legs], three of the four police
    present fired at his body.

OK then, lets see how someone walks after being shot in the leg.
    First a spud gun.

    Now the real thing.

    Hey! He does walk! 0:55-0:58s

PS. I fire .22 and the box says something like lethal for 2.5KM.
Don't know about a hand gun (muzzle velocity will be lower because the
barrel is shorter, so the slug has less time to accelerate) but that's
no excuse for letting off 6 and missing with every shot (May '08
CBD). It not a spaghetti western (or is it?)

So the police should have armed themselves with kitchen knives and taken
