  1. Yes, very likely. And possibly one requiring a little less courage than,
say, tossing yourself under a train. Perhaps thinking: "Maybe they won't
shoot me, they'll cosh me from behind, or use tasers, or negotiate me to
sleep, or something." An escape clause that makes it more likely that
the perp would proceed with the planned action.

And don't read into that the idea that I'm suggesting suicide is
    cowardly, because I'm not.

  2. Well, that was witty, but not sensible. Since when did 'proportionate'
mean identical? See response to Zebee below.

'It has now emerged that one of the police who fired at the teenager,
who was armed with two stolen knives, shot at his legs, but when Tyler
continued to advance three of the four police present fired at his body
until he collapsed.' <the entire paragraph>

'fired at his body until he collapsed' sounds rather off to me. It's
something you do on Mortal Kombat and it's ilk..

You say tomato, some say tomato. I think you will find that it is
standard police training to fire at the largest body mass and keep
firing until you run out of ammo. You assume that the police entering
this situation have plenty of time to think about what is going on and
should be well trained in the routines to follow. In reality, the
average cop will draw their weapon maybe once in their career and all
the training in the world can't adequately prepare anyone with adrenalin
and sensory overload. That's why they are trained to keep shooting once
they have started. Once the decision is made to use deadly force,
there's no point stopping halfway to see if you've been deadly enough yet.

I'm untrained. I don't know what to expect them to do, like others I
think the chest shots excessive. I can take someone down online with
less than a full clip on hardest on most FPS games .. but on those you
usually need to keep some ammo I guess.

So your position on police armed force is that they should use deadly
force only until the person is dead, and then no more. Can I presume
that they will all be armed with a multifunction mouse.. or do you think
they will operation keyboard commands quicker.

  9. Almost anyone else, I'd think they were taking the piss, no question
    about it.

On the balance of probabilities, inferred from other dumb shit you've
posted in the past, you're actually being earnest in comparing real-life
armed combat with video games, in which case you've just managed to
express the most pigshit-stupid thought ever seen on aus.moto.

In real life you fire at the body as it is the biggest target and
    contains vital organs.

Even from seven metres it is possible, depending on the individual
coppers' stress response, to miss most of the time in such a situation.

Warning shots are a no-no. You use a firearm only when you are believe
you or someone else is in imminent danger of death or serious injury.

You keep firing until the threat is neutralised.

Life has taught me that sometimes you have to make a decision that
results in a lousy outcome either way. One way will be usually be less
bad than the other. You make the decision, you move on.

Think about a game where, when you get headshot once, the game ends,
your computer erases it's hard drive and then the hardware fries itself.

Now come on IK, that's a damn big call, when you have to compare it to
GWF and KiwiPete's ramblings before you can classify it as *THE* dumbest

I guess "one of the stupidest" doesn't have the same ring

Well I hate to do a Nev on you, but after someone is dead - isn't deadly
force a waste of time .. or do you reckon they should come back and pump
a few into the corpse a week later or something ? Just to be sure. ?

I can you haven't realised, I wasn't particularly serious with the last
    sentence.

I don't know. You're the one who raised the issue of when they should
    or should not stop shooting.
