other than cash - receiving money from abroad?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Spinning Spanners, May 20, 2010.

  1. OK so I might have a buyer for my bike from Czech rep, which naturally
rings some alarm bells after hearing all the horror stories of people
being ripped off. So, other than walking down to the bank with him
with Euros/sterling and seeing if the teller notices if it's fake or
genuine, what is the preferred safe way to receive money from a non UK
national? I have even heard paypal can pull back funds - is this true?
So looking for a guaranteed safe way of receiving funds, if such a
thing exists (which it must, right?)

No desperate desire to sell, but if it works out, I see a KTM 950se in
    my future :)

    cheers

Deposit by Paypal and sterling cash on collection is the only way I would
sell a vehicle to a total stranger, whether from Prague or Preston.

Cash. Only. Even (particularly) if it's a £30k car.

Your only other option is an Escrow service, which is going to cost.

I've just come back from the bank, having deposited £4800 in twenties,
that I was given last night in return for my Sprint ST.

I felt a tad nervous - I don't think I've ever handled that much cash
    in one go before.

Have you *never* been involved in the importation of narcotics or weapons?
    Tut.
Or even just the odd hookey business arrangement or EKS.

It's a bit of a caaant if you want to withdraw more than £9999 these days
BTW. Something else the new government might address.

    @mid.individual.net:

A few years ago I had to go to Johannesburg for work. At the last moment
I was handed an envelope containing USD20,000 for the Joburg office. A
delightful introduction to the car hijack capital of the world. And then
they didn't even send a car to pick me up, and I had to take a taxi
(although on reflection this actually may have been safer, as the office
    knew the money was coming).

  8. Thanks - I'd even be willing to accept Euros and win/lose a few points
on the day-to-day rate, but would want to get the bank to accept it
    first.

Last time I deposited 3.5k for selling a ZX9 the cashier asked if I
would mind them asking why I had so much cash. I think the gist of my
answer was "if I was a drug dealer / crim I'd just lie to you and say
I'd sold a bike/car, so why do you want to know?". If it was 20k every
other week, fair enough, it'd ring some bells with me, but 3.5k?

Anyway thanks to the advise - cash it is.

    cheers

PayPal can indeed pull back funds. The absolute sure-fire way, oddly
enough, is Western Union. Yes, the Scammers' Bank. Cash paid into your
hand, and the charges aren't bad at all - certainly comparable with
bank charges and PayPal, maybe cheaper.

If he'll wear it, I sugest a WU deposit and go from there. Of course,
the danger is that he'll think that you are a conman....

The only time I've ever done this I didn't take the money from the
buyer myself - I had him come to the bank with me and hand the money
directly to the teller, with my paying-in slip.

cash in hand, take the buyer to the bank when you deposit it; it's the
    only way to be sure.

Odd fact. By^tel became the broadband supplier for WU across the UK.
It was a "Pink Pound" transaction between our Marketing Directors.
    Vive la Différence!

I signed up and used it last year to help out some (genuine) friends in
Namibia and it worked out fine.

I think the most I ever had[1] was just under 8K in cash.

    it's a pain to count.

[1] of my own - I've seen a fucksite more of other people's money in
cash - at least £100K in a brown bag once or twice[2].
[2] you wouldn't believe the size of the white-labelling kickbacks in
    the bakery industry[3]
[3] and it was almost legal!

as per my other post: *ding*

though, having thought about it a little more, I once /withdrew/
around /5k in cash to buy my first porsche.

Namibian's can be fine (and they have a decent beer - Windhoek: "The
Strong Man's Beer"); it's Angolans you have to watch out for IME -
    nasty twats.

Well, Nigerians also have a bad rep, but they're mostly in it for the
    LOLZ, if you ask me.

The guy at HSBC didn't bat an eyelid, and hardly a word was spoken
between us while I was at the desk, apart from the initial "I'd like to
    pay this in, please".

  17. Well the amount of money I want for it, some may indeed think that
way..... Not really, just need something more off roady that the 990
Adv, but still with enough poke to get be back from the Pyrenees, and
make progress when in the mood. Also the Adv's are becoming far too
common nowadays, I think I saw 3 last month.

    Cheers

nearly 5k" if done right could make you stand a bit taller :)
