OTish: Temperatures

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Jan 17, 2006.

  1. I notice in the next couple of days at least that the outside
temperature is going to be noticeably warmer than it has been of late.

Is this a sign that things are starting to warm up/get less cold or is
it just a sign that it's going to be warm for a couple of days?

I really can't remember when the sting of winter tends to lash its tail
for the final time; January and February, I thought were traditionally
    bloody cold.

  2. Hard to tell in the UK as it can happen any time. I wait until the end
of February before I take any view as to whether Winter has gone. Last
year even that didn't work because most of the cold weather turned up in
    March.

We seem to be getting wet and mild Winters which I guess are OK but it
does confuse the plants. I've got bulbs sticking their green bits out of
the ground and bloody weeds are growing. It's all a bit unnatural
    really.

January is often wet but not necessarily warm. February is often very
dry and most likely to be very cold, in the sunny SE.

Or that is what is left of my memory tells me.

That's the way it's always been. Cloudy days give warmer air but
higher chance of rain. The UK winter is either cold and dry or wet
and warm(ish). IMO the only thing that's changed is we get fewer
    extremes of each.

Seasonal shifting is what really screws the plants.

No, it's a sign that the wind is from the south-west. The current
forecast models show that the end of the month may be quite cold.

Whinging Courier emerged from their own little world to say
Take advantage of the warm, relatively dry spell. It's unlikely to last.

It's not that long ago that we had loads of snow in March/April.

Forget it - April / May is when winter moves on

    It's not started yet

Cheers all. It's what I'd suspected TBH. Working outdoors sees one
noticing variations in temperature and the recent mild spell, coupled
with the 11 and 12 degrees we're promised for the next few days in the
south had me kidding myself it was coming to an end.

Making the most of it seems the sensible (only) thing to do right now.

    Cheers.

I remember ice covered roads in February last year and my riding test
being cancelled due to snow last year. I also remember standing
outside The Black Horse Inn in April being fucking FROZEN while trying
to keep up conversation with sweller ab

I'm using this opportunity to get back into the saddle. I've de-rusted the
exposed bits on my bike. I now have to de-rust me. Jerez is calling......

I was thinking today that a spot of sunshine would be good for the soul.

A re-think is in order. Sunny foreign holidays for winter...

lol, I passed that one on the HOW building going north through the
midlands at about 1:30 am for a "by 4:30 am" drop near leeds (all pre
print bromide stuff for that employer) and then all the way back to
exeter, fucking thing said -3 which I can remember thinking at the time
I bet the bastards have the probe inside the building cos it felt about
ten degrees lower than that and the visor was icing up pretty
regularly, spent the rest of that night cursing and stopping at every
services for a hot coffee and 5 minutes under the hand dryers in the
    bogs

the ride back to exeter was the closest I ever came to convincing
myself I needed a bike with a fairing, eg totally and utterly
convinced, at least until i thawed.

real danger with that sort of stuff is how utterly it destroys
concentration, nowt worse than howling down a motorway in the dark with
a frozen brain coming up to a bend to the right and having flashbacks
to thinking you're on a road through the mountains in greece that bears
    to the left... freaky shit.
