I just got my DMV registration and the VLF on my 2003 BMW RT is $350!

Ouch... It seems that motorcycles are assessed at the same rate as
    automobiles.

They are. The VLF is 2% of value. As bikes depreciate more slowly
than cars, you may keep paying it longer.

When I was a New Yorker, registration fees were based on vehicle
weight rather than value, the theory being that heavier vehicles
caused more wear and tear on roads. I don't think they work that way
any longer. Perhaps Dem can tell us.

  3. IT does down at the same rate. And its based on purchase price of the
vehicle. Something like Year 1, full purchase price, year 2, 90%,
etc, down to 20% I think by year 10.

An RT is expensive, at $350, this means you spent $17.5k on it.

Its designed as a bit of a luxury tax, and also a "tax on those who
can afford it". Eg, if you are driving around in a gas guzzling H2,
you don't get any sympathy from me when the bill comes to >$1000.

  4. more slowly? I thought bikes depreciated FASTER than cars?!?

I'm glad I got my beemer used for $6000 (96 r1100rs in 2000), the fees are
    much more reasonable.

I bet you meant another kind of H-2

  6. Commercial vehicles in Ca. are taxed on weight also; pickups and 3/4
    Suburbans/Yukons are considered commercial vehicles.

I just got my DMV registration for my 2003 Kawi 636...~230 bucks..

Amazing part is, that bike no longer exists....

Now I need to convince the DMV of that (Even though all the paper work
already passed through their hallowed halls..)

  8. they are merely reverting to what they were ~ 2 years ago before they were
cut by 66% when the state was flush.
