6 miles as the crow flies is a fucking difficult taxi ride in the peak
    district.

6.7 miles west. I would rather stay 6.7 miles away than do the
    camping thing again.

I doubt they were running at 60 tonnes. A unit and trailer weigh in
at 14 tonnes unladen. So they have a carrying capacity of a legal 27
tonnes. For them to run to 60 tonnes, they'd have to carry 46 tonnes
    - nearly twice as much as usual. It's a long time since I drove one,
but I'm fucking certain that the tanks are not half-full by capacity,
when the legal weight limit is reached.

I'm sure that what TOG says is mostly correct. I'm sure the Govt said
"don't worry about weight; no fuel tankers will be taken to a
weighbridge until supplies are re-stocked". But 60 tonnes? Nah.

  12. More than that - an official dispensation was issued, and officially
repealed when it was sorted. I remember publishing the repeal notice (we
    *had* to!).

'Swot I was told, but you're probably right. Now, what's the phrase to
use here? Ah yes: "You know how bad my memory is getting...."

I wonder how much a tanker weighs, fully laden, because my understanding
is that they do actually only run about hald full. Think of that that
    cylinder *entriely* filled with fuel.

We need a maffematishun to kalkerlate. This will be difficult because
    tankers are oval-shaped.

A petroleum tanker is up to 42,800 litres:

    http://www.formulatankerrental.co.uk/pages/vehicles-rental.html

If it was water, that would be 42.8 tonnes payload. Petrol is slightly
lighter, so say approx 40 tonnes. Plus the weight of the trailer, tractor,
    Yorkie-eating blob etc.

We could get close to 60 tonnes if we filled the tanker with water and the
    cad with ukrmers.

I don't suppose this helps much.

On our recent visit to Carcassonne, we were confronted by the sight of
a 6x4 truck with a drawbar trailer attempting to do a full circuit of
a quite small roundabout. There was another waiting to attempt the
    same manoeuvre.

I think the situation was not helped by the caravan attached to the
    back of each trailer.

Yes, the circus was coming to town.
