I have a lot of contacts in Outlook [1] and want to know how to:

    (a) Get Outlook to record the display email field as a name not
    just the address by default.

    (b) Internationalise the numbers currently stored and record new
    ones by default.

    Ideas?

[1] Unfortunately friends and family make up a very small number
    of these.

not sure I understand what you mean here.
export the contacts, fiddle with them in Excel, and re-import.
    surely they're manually entered?

If you mean the 'Display as:' field on the contact card, mine shows as
'Full name (email addy)' by default. Dunno how to make it do that
    though.
    From the help:

Add the country/region code to numbers you enter
In Contacts, on the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click
    New Call.
    Click Dialing Options.
Select the Automatically add country/region code to local phone numbers
    check box.
The country/region code added is for the selection in the
Country/region list on the General tab of the Edit Location dialog box
(in the New Call dialog box, click Dialing Properties, and then click
    Edit).

Note If the Automatically add country/region code to local phone
numbers check box is not available, Microsoft Outlook doesn't recognize
the phone number format for the specified country code and cannot
    automatically format phone numbers.

The checkbox on mine is greyed out, so wibble.

When I enter an email address into the email field Outlook fills in the
"Display Name" field automatically. However, it always selects the email
address not the name of the individual. I have to delete the "Display
Name" entry and press return. It then Fills in the name correctly.

I have an enormous number of contacts - even after a recent purge - and
really want to avoid doing that.

Not if someone phones me and I add it to my phone. It's regularly synced
with Outlook and a lot of contacts end being entered via my phone.

I really rely on it to tell me where I'm supposed to be and what I've not
    done.

I'm entering names into the contacts record not the send line of an email.

Outlook 2003. My copy uses two profiles, one PST and the other is
    Exchange.

Both laptop and office machines are up to date
